MRI shows pedunculated fibroid and what they think is an endometrioma on my ovary. Is this problematic or require surgery?

After a CT scan and ultrasound which couldn't be positive if there was a mass on my ovary or not, an MRI last week shows what they think to be a 3.2 cm endometrioma or hemorrhagic cyst, but most likely and endometrioma.

I had the test last Thursday, got the results last Friday and then Monday (yesterday) the OBGYN dept called and made me an appt for tomorrow. I thought sure I'd be waiting weeks to get in for an appt but it was immediate. I am wondering if there is a reason why they were so quick about it. From what I've read, a fibroid and endometrioma are most likely benign findings.

The doctor who wrote me a note after reviewing my scan said

"I am seeing your MRI report today. It appears you have a fibroid, which are often not symptomatic except for abnormal bleeding on occasion, and an endometrioma which is a fluid filled cyst on your ovary. I have sent a referral for you to the gynecologists to schedule an evaluation for you. Often the best course of treatment is a laparoscopic removal of the cyst and they will discuss that with you."

So it sounds like surgery could be an option, but I have never had any kind of pain associated with it. Is it something that COULD potentially be cancerous or turn into cancer, especially with me being post-menopausal? Are there other treatments for it?

Hi- yes, it could be cancerous or morph into cancer. I would have it laparoscopically removed. Good luck.

I went to see the OBGYN yesterday and she said it could be taken out because even though they think it is a non cancerous endo that they wouldn't be able to tell without surgery. She said we could take the wait and see approach since I have no pain and do an ultrasound every 3 months for the next year to see if it grows or shrinks. If it grows, then have surgery. I decided to do the latter.

Ok and good luck. Just be vigilant. I also was diagnosed with endometriosis (in my late teens).

Hi Yes, I would have it removed. I had 4.5 endometrioma removed 2008 from left ovary. Never had endometriosis diagnosed but endometriomas are a more severe form of endometriosis. Jan 23 showed a cyst on ovary which grew rapidly and was removed July 23 however useless surgeon thought not cancerous but 7 weeks later Endometrioid Ovarian Cancer diagnosed. Apparently Endometriomas can be an indicator of progression to cancer although nobody said this to me in 2008. Just wanted to make you aware. Best of luck.
