Pain Relief that isn’t opiate based. Help!

Littlefluffycloud profile image

My stage 4 HGOC with mets on bowel (miliary disease) among other places and has now become painful.

I was given morphine but it put me into bowel obstruction so I am now too scared to have any opiate based painkillers.

Has anyone found any other pain relief that works and doesn’t slow the bowel?

I’ll try anything! At the moment it’s just paracetamol.

Thanks, Bianca

Have you tried taking a good laxative such as Movicol at least once a day when you are on opiate painkillers? They are sachets and you can take up to 3 a day, that should keep your bowels moving. I was given it in hospital when I was on morphine for a few days, no problems.

Thanks for taking the time to reply! I find morphine doesn’t really do anything for the pain so it feels like I get all the bad with none of the good! :( xx

Hi Fluffycloud

It might be worth asking if you can try Fentanyl patches. These allow the drug to be administered under the skin, a bit like HRT. They are opioid based I believe but reduce side effects like constipation.

Thanks, I will ask today. It’s worth a try. The pain is just always there.
