I can’t tell you not to panic, because bowel obstructions are nasty, but I can tell you that I’ve had two and each time it has resolved. Bowel rest and steroids to reduce inflammation have been the key, then very slow reintroduction of liquids, then very soft foods etc. I was in hospital for around 2 weeks each time. I’ve had a couple of near misses at home too, and have gone straight to fluids only for a couple of days to give the bowel a chance to rest. In each instance I’ve been able to continue/restart chemo pretty soon after things started to improve.
I hope you start to feel better very soon and that your hospice will be able to help you get back on track.
I’m technically platinum resistant, but am currently being treated with carbo/gem as it has been over a year since I last had platinum therapy (lots of other stuff in between though 😒).
I didn’t need an NG tube as nausea wasn’t a problem so no throwing up (or faecal vomiting 🤮). Have you been given one? How is it? The thought absolutely terrifies me - I honestly think they would have to give me a sedative to get it down.
I had my 7th bowel obstruction 4 weeks ago. I am down to 1 day in hospital now if I don’t have the NG tube. As Vicki says, resting the bowel and steroids is the way forward. Liquid is the key and have things little and often. It just doesn’t like too much at once.
Fingers crossed you don’t have to wait too long before things start getting better.
No surgery, they are so reluctant to even talk about it. I’ve got another app on Tuesday, I’m going to bring it up again seeing as they have told me I’ve only got one chemo option left and that they didn’t expect me to last 2 years and I’ve had 4.
I’m also looking at another oncologist closer to home and for another opinion.
It seems like my bowel is the major problem not the cancer 🙄
No experience of bowel obstruction but currently constipated for last 10 days so taking steroids and fluids and painkillers to try to sort .I know how uncomfortable I am so I can imagine how rotten you must feel, so sending a big hug or squeeze if that might be more helpful to you .xxx Julia
PS I am planning to play “celebration” very loudly round the house ( when something happens ) so everyone knows I have been and can stop asking me .xx
Whenever I’m having bowel problems, I practically have to take out a full page ad in the paper to let everyone know when things return to normal! People are fascinated by this stuff, aren’t they?! 😂💩
No wonder you're in a panic. The good news is that a blocked bowel usually turns out okay in the end. Starvation, to give the bowel a rest. It may unblock itself. Mine did luckily. I was advised to avoid fibre for a couple of weeks which at the time I thought was odd as more often than not you're told to eat lots of fibre. Anyway, I did this and all was fine. Not pleasant at the time. Also, be aware that it can occur at any time, even years after your surgery.
Hello Coksd, I've been dealing with a bowel obstruction for a month on and off. I would like to Thank you, for bring this embarrassing subject up. Also, All the Teal Sisters for there input.
God Bless,
Hi Clare,
I had bowel obstruction surgery summer 2017 after a two week stay in hospital with a total bowel obstruction causing sepsis. I was starved to rest the bowel but nothing worked, in the end it was adhesions caused by surgery and a very simple process to remove, they went in as a final option. They left it way too long as kept telling me they would be opening up a can of worms. I felt like no one wanted to take responsibility for it, bowel team didn’t want to cope with ovarian cancer and I was in the wrong place to be treated for OC.
How are the hospice dealing with it now, how are you getting nutrition? I had a central line put in for feeding, can they do this in a hospice? X
Sorry to read this but glad I’m not the only one who feels caught between the bowel team and their oncologist - I’ve had several stays in hospital since December due to adhesion pain causing partial blockages and transit pain and like you , no one wants to do anything surgical as I’ve been told it’s only going to worsen things - and then there’s the cancer angle so again it’s a no no - easy to say but hard to live with the consequences - glad they sorted that aspect out for you x
Hi Clare, really sorry to hear of this, what are they going to do about the obstruction? I really hope they get you sorted soon. Perhaps once they have sorted your obstruction they may be able to recommend another treatment. Please do not give up hope........we are all here for you. Perhaps the hospice will be best place for now.
Sending you lots of love 💕 hugs 🤗 and positive thoughts, keep go8ng honey, you can do it xxxx
Feeling for you just had 2nd obstruction in month this week was given X-ray and horrid mixture (licorice flavoured) that pushed through and cleared it ..I am home (bed shortage at hospital) did my first “poo” today fingers crossed ..I am in Australia stage 4 diagnosed May 2018 debulking surgery chemo now on calyx.. cheers
So sorry to hear about your bowel obstruction. It’s sounds like your in the best place though where they can help you and help alleviate the pain until it rectifies itself. Fingers and toes crossed this happens soon. Have no helpful advice but the ladies here seem to know lots about it and all the advice is great. Take care and hope all gets worked out soon. Antoinette
Hi deep breath! Ng tube! Sip water while going down! Easy! Gastro graffin put from tube ! 6hrs later omg! The dam gave way! No surgery 🙏 now on cisplatin, scan showed stable friday plus bowel has improved from previous scan! Hold on in there I’m non braca 111c 4yrs in ! Ive have gone back on my serrpatesse heavy 3x80,000 which I believe has helped, just reducing down to 1 x 80.000 ! Ca125 was 520 now 317 🙏 try not to panic! Always hope 😘😘😘
It a silk worm enzyme & it’s breaks up scar tissue clears arteries etc ! Read up on it & Reed the people that have left information on it on amazon! I buy lindens 80,00” start with one a day on a empty stomach then increase to two , I started on : but cams down to two then one, give it a good month! No better etc ! ! Research them there are a few out there with negative results, but it’s the nature of what a silk worm does ! It’s just logical! Good luck xx
On holiday recently, my German friend (a doctor) made me live whole yoghurt, with 2 heaped teaspoons of whole linseed, chopped fruit & grated cinnamon in a glass every morning for my bloat!
It worked as a softener & anti inflammatory I think, & within days I was sooo regular I cd not imagine why no-one had suggested similar before. I have this for breakfast at least 3 times a week now, & every day if/when needed
I too have found a lot of changes in the last 4 years, though remain NED. Very grateful for that
