Feeling desperately alone and scared

I am meeting with my oncologist tomorrow morning (it is 9:00PM here in Canada where I am located). I feel like my entire body is frozen and I feel sick to my stomach. I could barely get myself to take a shower.

I sure could use some kind words and encouragement right now. My husband has been wonderful to me but at this point, he doesn't know how to help me. I talked to my psychiatrist but it hasn't helped much.

Just want someone to chat with that has gone through a recurrence before. I have a few more threads if you want to look up the details.

I don't know what to hold on to right now.

Thank you for your reply. I am in Ottawa so you are not that far away from me. Just difficult to not go into the darkess thoughts right now. Trying to stay calm until tomorrow. Hope everything goes well for you.

Is it on this site. I am Canadian and I assuming that you are too as well since you mention Mississauga. Just not sure where I need to go to access this information.

I was very worried whilst waiting for the result of a PET scan this time last year as my recurrence very soon after the first six sessions of chemo and debulking surgery. I subsequently had 6 rounds of carbo/caelyx which had an amazing result for me; I am now on a maintenance drug. My oncologist recently told me that he was not sure it was going to work BUT it did! I live alone but I still try to make the most of life, there is always hope - lean on your husband and friends they will give you strength. Katy 🙏🌹

Can I ask you what type of OC you had and what the maintenance drug is called? xx

I have stage 3c high grade ovarian/peritoneal cancer. I have been taking Niraparib since February . I was supposed to have the maximum dose of 300mgs per day but it has been cut down to 200mgs as it was adversely affecting my platelets. So far I have no side effects other than a bit of fatigue but I still walk 10,000 steps a day with my dog. My CA 125 has risen slightly because of the dose reduction but is still in normal range. I am just awaiting the result of my latest scan. Wishing you all the best. Katy

Hi Chanterelle,So sorry because it can feel like such a lonely, scary journey at times. But for me the worst is not knowing and not having a plan. So generally I feel better once I've spoken to the onc, even if it's bad news because I know what action we will take.

Hang in there and hopefully you will have a good plan to work with tomorrow.

Love and hugs,

Martine xx

Hello Chanterelle,

It is your usual oncologist? I hope you have a good relationship and she/he is understanding of the psychological as well as physical effects. As time passes more options are available.

I reassure my husband that I don’t expect him to sort out the situation but to be with me and listen or hold me when I feel sad.

I take a day at a time and try to find times to think and times to be immersed in something other than the OC.

Sending you hugs from over here in the UK.

Dear Chanterelle,

I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling so alone and scared at the moment. Some of our members have already posted some messages of support for you.

As you are based in Canada, I am wondering if you have come across Ovarian Cancer Canada? Their website is: ovariancanada.org/. They may be able to offer you information and support which is more local to where you are.

However, Ovacome are here to support anybody affected by ovarian cancer, regardless of where they are based. Indeed, many of our members are based outside of the UK.

If there is anything that you would like to talk through, or you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch. You can call our friendly support line on (+44) 800 708 0054, send us an email at support@ovacome.org.uk, or schedule a Zoom conversation with a member of our team. We are on hand from 10:00am - 5:00pm BST.

Hi Chanterell, I'm in the states our healthcare is different I was diagnosed stage 3B but am currently NED 21 months every appointment, scan is stressful I was able to go thru my local Cancer center for free counseling which helped. As we all fear the words you have a recurrence in many instances due to new drugs and treatments OC is now being treated as a chronic disease. It is one crazy journey and Friends and Family are well meaning but I do believe only fellow Teal Sisters really get it this is by far my most favorite support sight. Hugs from Chicago

Sorry to hear about this. Sometimes if you carry anxiety in your abdomen it makes it hard to get food down. A tip that is use and may help. Lay face up on the floor. Reach your thumbs under the ribs in front and pull down in the direction of your feet. Go slow and steady, then repeat as needed.

The reason this is so helpful is stress pushes the stomach up to the diaphragm and crimps off opening.

If I misunderstood your post, I apologize and hope all goes well for you.

Anxiety is the name of the game with OC. I had a recurrence very quickly after all clear, needed another op and then RT. But been ok so far since then. I do some healing meditations and yoga nidra. Plus I have a twin sister to share things with. Your husband is possibly as scared as you are. You can face it together. Fingers crossed for you. xx

How did you get on with your consultation?

I’ve been through a few recurrences. Keeping a positive mental attitude, healthy diet, relaxation/meditation, and good , supportive relatives and friends certainly help. Try to stay positive! ❤️🙏
