c125 of 72 could it be anything else?

Blood test results just back, c125 is 72 I’m 48 years hypothyroid with autoimmune Hashimoto’s have 2 fibroids <1cm from transvaginal ultrasound. Also had MRI today to look at 2 cysts in thyroid.

From people’s experience here is it likely this is Ovarian cancer? I have absolutely no knowledge or references. No cancer in the family.

Where would you recommend I read up? the internet is terrifying.

Hello, sorry to hear you are worried. The ca125 can be raised due to inflammation not just OC. So the answer to your question is yes it could be something else but it is crucial to have all the diagnostic tests in case it is OC. I have no real history of cancer in my family but unbeknown to me i was carrying the BRCA gene mutation. So it can appear out of nowhere.

Please don’t google anything. If you want information use the Ovacome website. You will see that treatment for OC is much more advanced even since 2015 when i was diagnosed.

Take it one day at a time, you are doing all the right things to help yourself now let the Doctors do their job xx

I had a look at my ancestry DNA through the genetic genie free report. Looks like I have BRCA2 and ABCG2 and NQO1 I’ve forwarded the info to the surgery for them to check for sure. Thanks for mentioning this 💚

I second Lyndy in her recommendation to step away from Google and stick with sites like Ovacome and Macmillan. Both helplines are great too for reliable information and emotional support. Sounds like you’re having a good investigation - as you said the raised ca125 can be a result of lots of things but best to be sure. This bit of waiting and testing is excruciating. Please use this forum alongside any support you have in your life to talk and share your fears and worries. It’s been a real help to me to post and chat on here with those who get what I’m feeling (sometimes more so than friends and family who love and support me but also have their own fears and worries that can lead to me feeling guilty for being too honest!)

Take care and let us know how you get on.

Hi,

I agree with the other replies the internet will drive one crazy. I am an OC Survivor I had silent endometroisis from what I recall fibroids could be estrogen driven which could cause an elevated CA125 not necessarily OC. Although your 48 are you experiencing signs of menopause?

thanks for the info x

I was put on HRT 4 years ago and it made me so unwell, periods twice a month, gut disorders, depression , anxiety and hypothyroidism finally GP sent blood tests off, stopped HRT at once and started Levothyroxine after a 6 week break. 12 months on feeling much more myself but a way to go in treating the aftermath of leaky gut, food intolerances, super heavy periods that don’t want to stop, pelvic pain etc.

Dear Regenallotment,

Thank you for your post. I can see some of our other members have offered some advice around CA125 not being a perfect test for ovarian cancer.

The CA125 test checks for a protein in the blood which is used as a marker with ovarian cancer. It is normal to have some CA125 in the blood and for it to be raised due to other, less serious conditions. The levels can be raised due to ovarian cysts or endometriosis, for example.

If is elevated then you will have further investigations to try and identify the cause of the rise. Some people have a naturally higher level of CA125, and if you have the test on your period this can cause it to double or even triple, so a raised CA125 doesn’t mean you have cancer.

You can read more about how ovarian cancer is diagnosed here: ovacome.org.uk/tests-for-ov...

If you would like to talk things through or ask any questions, you can call the Ovacome support line on 0800 008 7054 or email support@ovacome.org.uk. We are open Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm.

Best wishes,

Jo
