I finished my chemo for ovarian cancer in Nov 2021 and start tomorrow Niraparib for two years. My hair has started to grow back and I was wondering if I can dye my hair as it is grey?

Hi Jingles, when I had front line chemo carbo/taxol in 2019 I lost all my hair. When I finished chemo & my hair grew back it was all grey & I didn't dye it for 6mths after as I was advised not too. I started chemo again carbo/Gemcitabine in March 2021 for a recurrence & even though my hair didn't go completely I had alot of bald patches & it really thinned out. Since Sept 2021 I have only been on Gemcitabine & my hair started growing back but it was driving me mad seeing the grey hairs appearing again. I decided I was going to chance it & dye my hair. I found a hairdye in Boots called "Natural instincts" by clairol which is vegan & has no ammonia. I only dyed my hair 2 days ago for the second time since it started growing back & it doesn't seem to have damaged the new hair growth in any way. It makes me feel better so feel it was worth taking the chance. If you are feeling nervous about doing it you could ask the nurses, but they will probably tell you what they told me that it's best not to dye it. Best of luck with starting Niraparib hope it does the job X

Hi Tulips66!

Hope all is well with you.

I have been on Naraparib since last September and have very few side effects and all is going well.

I have coloured my hair for many years prior to my chemo and surgery, and like you… I felt it was time to go back to it again. (I never asked, so was never advised not to… and didn’t think anything g of it to be honest)😞

That being said, I dyed my hair 2 weeks ago today…with a vegan/no ammonia hair dye ….and had a really bad allergic reaction.

I am just feeling I can be off antihistamines this last 2 days. It was pretty bad to be honest. My emerg doctor advised it is common as our body chemistry is permanently changed by chemo, so a reaction to something now is not to be underestimated.

From what I have read, it is a “PDD” chemical in dark hair dyes that is what most reactions are caused by. A Henna product may be more suitable (Control GX for men is what I used for many years…as it’s just Henna in a shampoo believe it or not…lol). Once my hair fades, this may be a route I will look into.

But I can see how you don’t like the color of regrowth … I don’t either.

Take caution if you go ahead with it.

Good Luck! Trish

Thanks Trish

I have gone completely white, so I haven’t ruled out leaving it as it is. Just waiting for it to grow a bit more and see what it is like when its in a style. I used to dye blonde so its interesting to know about the PDD in dark hair dyes. Hope you are all good after your allergic reaction.

I am all good now, just had to take antihistamines for a couple of weeks. That being said, I dyed my hair a dark teal colour… but even after 2 weeks now…. It’s very very black (with a blue highlight if I stand under a light…lol). At first it was much darker than I wanted…but in consideration of the reaction I had…. I will just live with it this dark! 🤪. My wig I wore when I was doing chemo was also so dark it appears black…. So I could also wear it again (warmer in the winter anyways😉) until this dyed color fades a bit.

I have been on it over 4 years and have died my hair with no problems ( that I see) throughout that time. xx

Hi Jingles, I haven't coloured my Hair since I've been ill but I have read up on it. Firstly we are all different so just because one person can get away with using a particular product doesn't mean we all can, the 6 months after chemo is the usual length needed before dying again but I know a lady who didn't wait and used a wash in colour with no side effects. My advice would be to follow the advice on the packet and do a patch test or go to a trusted hairdresser to see if they can help. Good luck I will certainly go back to dying mine if I get to that stage. Hope this helps Sue xx

Wow lucky lucky you ! )) I finished my 6 chemo end of August, and its only started to grow back 12 weeks later ! Its a new baby hair so I would stay away of coloring it so soon/ Let yr body get red of toxins first. I wanted to do my semi permanent tattoo brows ( Microblading ) yearly November but my team said NOP not yet. And then in December my brows started to develop back and i changes my mid to tattoo them. My hair now growing 90% white and I like it )) Am just happy for any fkng hair ))

Hi

Yes I guess we should be grateful it does come back. Although when having my chemo I had a really good wig and everyone used to comment on how nice my hair was! Perhaps I should carry on wearing that and save myself some money. 🙂

When I was deciding whether to take a parp (niraparib) or not, I asked if I could get my streaks done if I took it, and was told yes, even while I was on the drug, so long as at least 6 weeks had gone by since my chemotherapy. I only had carboplatin and hadn't lost my hair, but oh how I wish it were grey - I have some silver threads throughout, but as my hair grows, dark brown roots are revealed, even though I'm not far off 72, drives me mad. My sister's a year younger than me, and she was completely grey ten years back, she just uses a blonde rinse occasionally to tip it into blonde, whereas I'm still stuck with 4 hours of colouring every 8 weeks or so, when the roots get too long. Though I'm having to put up with nearly 2 inches of roots currently as I'm back on carboplatin... and they're still not grey.

Rant over - but the advantage with streaks is, the dye's not on your scalp, so much less likely to have an allergic response than if its all over the head. Even so, on newly growing hair, you may need to avoid harsh chemical dyes.

Hi In May 2021 colored my hair 4.5 months after my last chemo

Used AVEDA at a salon no issue

I still color and have been on a trial Maintenance chemo infusion every 3 weeks

Just be gentle and don’t overdue it

I have also used Henna no issue and clariol natural all no issue

Do what makes you feel good as it lifted my spirits

I’m too young for grey hair

Best of luck

Margaret

Yes Mary I think I will wait a bit longer as it has only been a couple of months after chemo and I need to see how I react to the Niraparib before I even think about dyeing. I am only 60 and yes I feel I am not ready to go grey yet although I do have an excellent wig! Thks for the reply

I have been on Niraparib for 18 months now. After frontline chemo in 2018 my hair grew back completely grey ( age 51). I was advised not to dye it for 3-6 months after frontline chemo finished.

After which I found a dye called Vatika ( which is henna based & you mix the powder with water). Obviously this is for brunettes to use.

I am very happy that this dye. It has caused me no issues, simple to use & gets rid of the greys. so have been regularly using it since a few months after frontline chemo.

Niraparib doesn’t react with this dye for me either.

Hope you find one that suits you once your hair feels stronger. Xx

Hi

Yes I am going to wait a little longer before trying to use a hair dye. As I only finished chemo in November and just started the Niraparib. I have had so many responses and now have ideas of quite a few options. When do you come off the Niraparib?

Hi Margaret

Yes although I went grey quite young I have always dyed it so going from colour to seeing yourself completely white is a shock. I was thinking like you not sure if I am ready for it.

Thanks for the reply

Jane

I think that’s wise Jane. You’ll get through this. I’m still taking Niraparib everyday & believe I will continue to do so unless it stops working for me.

Just dyed my roots with Vatika this morning. Always happy with the result.

Take good care, Lynne xx
