How worrying and upsetting that the doctor didnt answer your questions. Only thing I can suggest is you ring Macmillans and talk to one of their nurses and ask them how to proceed. Your mum cant be left not being able to eat. Do hope you are able to find some positive help.
Hello Has your Mum’s pleural effusion been drained Alliollie? Like you, I suspect this problem with swallowing could be related pain. When I had PE I also had swallowing problems but not pain.
I think you need an explanation and an idea of what they intend to do now xx
Hi there, Have you a CNS (cancer nurse specialist) who you can contact and relay your concerns to? They are normally connected to your hospital team and should be able to help with any questions. Don't forget the Ovacome team too who have a wealth of knowledge.
Hi Aliollie
I’m really sorry to hear that your mum has been experiencing excruciating pain and difficulty eating. It sounds like this has been a really hard time for you both. If the guidance from the doctor was unclear yesterday, a member of your mum’s clinical team where she is treated should be able to offer further clarity and personalised advice. As Davonian suggests above, your mum’s CNS may be able to provide insight to the cause of these difficulties as well as ideas to alleviate these symptoms for your mum. If your mum's symptoms worsen and you feel you need more urgent medical help, NHS 111 is available 24/7.
If you would like to talk things through with a member of our support team, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. You can call our support line on 0800 008 7054 or 07503 682 311, email support@ovacome.org.uk or send us a message directly through this forum. We’re here to support you, Monday – Friday, 10am – 5pm.
Best wishes

Unsure if your speaking to a GP you need to contact the cancer team using the yellow alert card your mum would it should have been given it's a 24/7 service they should be able to help her straight away or advise her the best course of action, if you do not have the yellow alert card number contact your CNS or the cancer hospital ward. Wishing you mum a speedy fix to her issue.
Hi AliollieI had trouble swallowing even water this time last year when I had pleural effusions. It was very frightening I kept gagging. I rang my gp and they put me on some white gaviscon advance liquid which was horrible when I couldn't swallow plus they changed my stomach liner to a stronger one. This combination did work for me.

I'm really sorry for this situation, contact your CNS asap as advised in the posts. All the very best Sue xx
Thank you all for your time in replying. Mum is still in hospital they have said she has asperation pneumonia. They have put her on morphine, this all started after she had the fluid drained, not really understanding what is going on still, she has Just started to eat very small amounts of my brothers homemade turkey soup which is good she is really weak she seems to have gone downhill so quick. Praying she will improve soon. Wishing you a happy Christmas xx
