Does anyone here get leg cramps that wake you up from sleep. I’m now taking Avastin only and I’ve been having pains in my calves as well as my neck but only at night. What do you do about it. ?

Dear Cher96

Thank you for your post. I’m sorry you’ve not had any replies yet, I’m sure the forum community may be able to share their experiences with you soon.

Have you spoken to oncologist, CNS or member of your clinical team about the cramping pains in your calves and neck that you're experiencing? It’s important they are aware of this side effect so they can advice appropriate management and hopefully bring you some relief from this.

If you would like to talk to a member of our support team, you can message us directly via the forum, phone us on 0800 008 7054 or email us at support@ovacome.org.uk. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you feel it might be helpful to chat things through.

Best wishes

Hi Cher96, my wife had this from avastin. She’s got it again now from gem/Carbo. Heat seems to be the best relief. Hot water bottles, heat packs, hot bath/shower. Hope you get some relief from the aches 🌼

Hi, I am also on Avastin. I go for reflexology treatments and I drink Magnesium (or I spray it on at night). Try it, it works for me

Take magnesium taurate, and vitamin B6. These help greatly with leg cramps and nerve aches. Epsom salt baths and heating pads are good too.

Cher,

I take Magnesium and believe it or not, when I get leg cramps I take about a half tsp of prepared mustard and put it under my tongue. Cramps subside in about 1 minute. There is some type of acid in it that relieves cramps.

Best of luck!!

Dear Cher 96 -

I am also on Avastin only and about a month ago when I was working hard to increase my daily walking distance I got those middle of the night leg cramps! I don't know why magnesium helps but it really does -- even as a topical application to the sore leg. I live in the U.S. and I use a roll-on cream called CRAMP 911. Within just minutes of rubbing it in the cramp is gone -- like magic! After a few nights of using it I've had no further problems with leg cramps. Hope you can find a similar product in the UK. The Avastin is doing a good job of keeping my cancer at bay -- may it do the same for you!

Yes!!!!! I had terrible TOE cramps at night sometimes on both feet! Had to hold onto them just so I could sleep OH MY that was a chore! A friend recommended an electrolyte that is added to water.........called VEGA it is sugar free and vegan. OH my gosh took it that day before bed no more cramps. I have switched to Liquid IV a hydration multiplier plus that we get from COSTCO here in the US. I am sure one of the health stores has something similar in the UK. Totally made a difference in my life while on Avastin! Even my nurses said yes its a good thing to take mostly because you are supposed to drink 64 ounces of water/fluid and adding more fluid flushes out electrolytes.......so seems to work for me.Good Luck Debbie from San Diego

Hi there. Not on same meds as you atm, but got asked if I was having any cramps as my 'phosphate' levels are low. Showed up in pre chemo bloods. Might be worth a query with your team. One of the most common reasons for cramps is dehydration which I did suffer with whilst on 3 weekly Avastin earlier this year. I thought I was drinking loads but not enough. Started making sure I drank a pint of water before bed. This was hard as I knew I would be up for the loo through the night and everytime I did get up I took a few swigs from bottled water I had at bedside. It did stop the cramps. Had to have Avastin stopped for other reasons but I still follow that pattern of trying to drink a pint before bed and water through night.Have you reported this symptom back to your team? Hope you get sorted soon. It is such a horrible pain and disturbed sleep from it is not helpful for you. Good Luck.x
