Back pain ever not a symptom of recurrence?

Hi all, how is everybody? Has anybody had back pain and it turned out just to be good old back pain? (Rather than a recurrence).

I finished chemo in April (NED), had my big surgery last year and am due my first follow-up scan in August. Every day I worry about every ache and pain. They said to "call if any symptoms" but I'd be ringing every day (if I'm honest!). My gut has been a bit more mixed than normal and I've had some lower back pain but those could easily be explained by eating / drinking and post-surgery posture changes I guess. I'm quite prone to anxiety (and find therapy helpful!) but I just wonder endlessly if and when the cancer might return.

If you've had a recurrence, what symptoms did you get that prompted you to go and get checked?

More info: I'm 30 and was diagnosed Stage 2B low grade mucinous and was told that with its subtype and how it was growing, that it's a very very high chance of recurring for me.

Many thanks x

Hi. Get your urine checked.after numerous 'A' symptomatic water infections I realised the back ache I was worrying about was worse at the time I had a UTI. I too like you have so many aches and pains and gut issues it is difficult picking out what I need not to worry about and what I should report to my trials nurse! Major surgery does leave you with all sorts of discomfort as you heal for a long time. I have to really consciously shut my worrying companion up!! All the scheduled blood tests and CT scans are there to keep an eye on everything Put your faith in them to pick anything nasty up and your team to act on them. Tomorrow you are going to give yourself a day of worrying (that's bossy of me isn't it!! ) For me it is something Iam getting better at doing but it takes practice. Take care.xxx

That should have been 'a day free of worrying'

Hi, I suffered terrible back pain a little while after surgery, thought it was part of the recovery then when it became excruciating, went to hospital and had a litre of pus removed from an abscess on the liver, a post op infection. So my advice would be, get it checked out and don't worry about "bothering people" .Best wishes xx

Hello londoner0,

I am sorry to hear that you are having a worrying time at the moment. We would always encourage people to speak to their team if they have any symptoms that are concerning them for peace of mind.

I was wondering if you had seen our Webinar called ‘Managing anxiety after treatment ends and coping with the fear of recurrence’? I will put a link here if you think it may be helpful and would like to take a look:

Yes, I've had back trouble at least 8 times since my diagnosis and surgery in January 2018, sometimes ending up on two sticks for a week, but that is not abnormal for me, I had arthritis of the spine before my diagnosis anyway plus disc trouble in the lumbar region. Nearly every time my back plays up, the oncologist frets about it, and actually got an MRI or CT done the first two times, but its never been anything to do with the cancer.

If, though, your back pain is not normal for you and/or its been going on for a while and not improving, I think you should mention it to your oncologist, just in case.
