Hard area around navel

Hi all, I had debulking surgery about eight months ago. Incision just to the left of my navel. I recently noticed a very hard tennis ball sized area behind my navel. My doctor palpated the area and said he believes it is scar tissue, but that it could be a hernia. I have read several of your posts regarding post-op hernia. I’m not one who keloids so I am surprised at the size and hardness of this area. Has anyone else had a hard lump near incision? Thanks

Sashay

It does sound like it could be a hernia. Lots of us post op ladies have them, and the advice is usually to leave well alone unless they cause problems.

I had several but they were very small lumps along the incision line- like peas but hard. I think you should check with your oncologist just to be on the safe side. My GP said they were not tumours but they were. Yours don’t sound the same at all but still would seem sensible to get them checked out.

Thanks Neona. My onc did examine the area. He also did internal exam and said everything felt normal. My last CA125 in January was12. The area around my incision is still tender. But I guess I just have to live with that. It could be worse. I am thankful that my digestion is good. I do plan to have a colonoscopy. I’m due for one. Thanks again for responding. Sashay

Sorry but yes..it does sound like a hernia..try lying on back and gently push the lump..back behind the muscle..if goes flat its a hernia...there are lots of care advice on various sites..also you surgeon can do a repair....

Thanks, Annette. I am grateful for your response. It’s reassuring to know that this can occur after surgery. Sashay

Well

A scan will tell all but 30% of post hysterectomy patients develop eventrations or incisional hernias which form along the incision

I’m glad that’s all it was for you and that it has resolved. Scar tissue or hernia, just don’t be a new tumor! Thanks for responding

HI Sashay I had op last March and 9 months later had a lump size of an orange justvaboce left hand side of belly button and told it was a hernia as during op muscle cut through which weakens the wall. Oc referred me for girdle or belt. She did talk about a mesh which I was not keen on Got telephone call from Company in England asking for measurements and decided to go for belt which fastens with velcro and comes in black., white or skint one and if first one fine they sent out a 2nd

Thanks so much, Molly. I will check into that. I sure don’t want more surgery. Best Sashay

I think I’d ask for a scan, as I had a laparoscopic surgery and ended up with a tumor to three of the five sites. Since you said your debulking scar came up close to there and the size of it I’d be concerned it another tumor or hernia

I think so, I never expected to come away from a surgery with a reoccurrence. Keep us updated on what’s going on please :)

Just had CA125 on May 10th. It was 12 in January. Now it is 11. Also, I was in the driver’s seat of my car and I bent open to pick up something from floor of passenger seat. I felt something pop in my abdominal area and I haven’t had abdominal pain since. I just brace my stomach when I cough ( which is every day) and that has helped. Thanks again. Sashay
