Bladder Irritation

Well Hello,

So just finished my weekly 10th treatment of Taxol/Avaistin and 6 more to go, woot woot. All is looking good on the CA 125 were it is dropping and now at 11 halfway thru from a 53.

With in the last couple of weeks I been having urinating problems were I have go urgently every hour were it seems like and then pain when I am done. Been checked for UTI'S and don't have any. So now to the Urologist. My Oncologist suggested I might have an irritated bladder and wondering if others have had this and what you do to overcome it.

Thanks again my teal sisters..

Cheers!!

Shelly

Yes I have had loads of trouble with this. You can look back at my previous posts. I have been checked out by urology but they found nothing wrong. I now get "attacks" about once a month and take a tablet for this. (Solifenacin)I believe chemo can result in an irritable or over active bladder.

Hi. Probably a daft idea, but I’d try an anti-yeast supplement - oregano oil is one - as sometimes the symptoms of yeast infections are similar to bacterial UTIs. I have no evidence that it would help, but cancer and the drugs we take do allow yeasts to multiply.Meanwhile, lots of sympathy.

Best

I have had the symptoms of a UTI for several months now. Last three urine cultures came back negative. No-one seems to know why this is happening. No treatment seems to work. I know this answer is probably not useful but it's helpful to know that I am not alone with this really annoying problem. It never occurred to me (nor was it ever suggested) that chemo might be the cause of an irritated/over a active bladder. I just happen to have a video check-up booked with the hospital continence nurse next week. I am definitely going to ask her about this. Hope you get it sorted soon. Jackie

Hi. Nothing conclusive after speaking to the Urology CNS but she said she had some thoughts about treatment but wanted to speak to her consultant first and would call me back. She never did call me back but after waiting over a week I was suddenly received an appointment to see Consultant Urologist but it isn't for a month. I guess I will just have to get on with things until then.

Was able to see urologist which they gave me two types of tablets for overactive bladder and pain meds for bladder spasms. They had to put on a catheter for a couple of days for relief and sleep. Finally bladder has settled down which am happy about.

Went had treatment on Thursday which now they believe Avaistin was the culprit. So after my taxol which 11 more treatments to go, will be putting me on a new maintenance drug. They extended my taxol because am very responsive and numbers are great. Guess it's an additional insurance policy.

Hope all goes better for you and get some relief.

Glad things have been sorted for you. It seems problems with water works really pull you down so that's good news. I am not on any treatment or maintenance for the cancer at the moment so the whole thing is a bit of a mystery. It could be the long term magnesium supplements but that's grasping at straws really. I think, like you, I shall have to wait until I see the consultant.

Hi ShellySimilar problem , usually worst just after chemo then sorts itself out just in time for next dose!

Resorted to pads for worst occasions.

Chemo now finished but looks as though it stopped working over last few rounds as CA125 starting rising and just dont feel "right " whatever that is!

Scan next week then consultant.

Good luck with the rest of your treatment.

I'm taking D-mannose to give my bladder some support. I too had issues with urgency, frequency, and sometimes burning. I did have one confirmed UTI and did a course of antibiotics to clear it. But since I started with the D-mannose my bladder function seems more normal. I'm drinking lots of water to support my kidneys so I still have a pretty high frequency during the day but I can get through the night and don't have any burning. Hope you find something useful in everyone's suggestions! Deb in Colorado

Thank you, will give that a shot. It feels like I go every half an hour and haven't slept thru a night in the last 3 weeks. Have resorted to pads when I leave the house for a just incase. Juat think to myself 5 more treatments after today.

I’m also taking D-Mannose for bladder support. My GP recommended it. It’s not on prescription so I found it on eBay. I’ve been taking it for about 6 weeks so cannot tell if it’s working yet. I also take a daily 50mg daily antibiotic Nitrofurantoin. I haven’t had a UTI for about 6 weeks now so fingers crossed 🤞

So sorry, Shelly, to hear about the bladder problem.

Both Taxol and Avastin can cause bladder irritation. Have you been drinking enough to flush all toxins out? with frequent urination, often we may be inclined to stop drinking.

At times, little adjustments can make a big difference. Drinking lots of water before and after chemo and herbal teas such as chammomile, fennel, mint. Taking magnesium supplements and Vitamin D. All have anti-inflammatory and calming properties.

Take care x
