What qualifies for Solid Tumours in Ovarian Cancer?

Dear ladies,

This probably seems like a stupid question, but I have only heard my cancer described as “lesions “ and “nodules” never as tumours.

I am researching Clinical Trials and many are aimed for those with Silid Tumours.

Is that what we have?

Thanks,

Laura

I’ve no idea, Laura. Mine definitely began with a large tumour.

It’ll be interesting to see what your research uncovers.

HELLO LAURA,

I HOPE YOU'RE FEELING BETTER. I THOUGHT LESIONS WERE THE BEGINNING OF SOLID TUMORS WHICH BEGIN ON THE SURFACE. I KNOW A NODULE CAN BE BENIGN OR MALIGNANT AND SO THEY WATCH FOR GROWTH OR STABILITY IN SIZE. PERHAPS THEY MEAN SOLID AS OPPOSED TO A TUMOR WHICH IS SOLID WITH A FLUID COMPONENT???

ARE YOU STILL GOING FOR CHEMO? HOW IS IT GOING? I HOPE WELL.

SENDING YOU GOOD ENERGY AND BEST WISHES!

Hello Laura

Although every trial has its own strict criteria, most usually when trial criteria refers to 'any solid tumour' it means not a blood cancer such as leukaemia or lymphoma. Ovarian cancer is a solid tumour cancer.

Best wishes

Thanks, Anna,

I was totally ignorant about this.

And that is a big help now.

Gives me more to think about.

Keep well,

Laura

That is a good question Laura. I’ve had my cancer described as lesions, nodules and tumours but for some reason have never really questioned where they differ.

Yes, we have what is called a solid tumour, as opposed to cancer of the blood. The term is used a lot in trials.

Hope this isn't a stupid reply, my assumption is all ovarian cancer has solid tumors, the other type are usually in blood cancers. If you research car t cell immunotherapy they talk about solid tumors there and have not had much success with solid tumors. That is my understanding but I know your much more informed than me. Anyway all the very best of luck with your research. Sue xx

yes, as I understand it if not solid tumours it is blood cancer. I am on a trial for solid tumours.

Hi Neona,

May I ask what trial you are on and where. Thanks. Gwen x

Hi Gwen, it is a phase one trial for solid tumours called Patriot. I go to the UCLH Research Facility and the trial is under the Royal Marsden. It is run by Dr Martin Forster. The drug is an ATR inhibitor called AZD 6738.

Thanks, everyone!

This gives me more choices for trials, if I go down that route!

Hi Laura

I have PPC which I believe are in the form of tiny seeds of cancer scattered all over my peritoneum . I never had a large solid tumour which may have been easier to deal with . My cancer was inoperable so I had chemo only in 2011. I did respond well but it returned in my Peri aortic lymph nodes twice. I was reassured at my last app that although my lymph nodes are still swollen my pelvic area remains clear for now.

However my next app in Oncology is tomorrow week and I have been feeling increasingly unwell so I’m hoping my luck has not run out ! My bloods will be done tomorrow so I’m keeping my fingers crossed .

I’m sorry for going on about myself while answering your question Laura. I hope it is helpful

Dear Lindaura, I was always referred as having a large mass or lesion.

Diagnosis spoke of an Endometrioid carcinoma.

The word tumour was not used.
