Avastin aching joints.

I have Avastin every 3 weeks, and my joints are so sore! I can hardly put my knees and ankles together at bedtime. Can anyone recommend effective pain relief, any help greatly appreciated x

Hi Georgia

Sorry to hear that Avastin is causing you problems.I guess the best thing for pain relief is paracetamol.My GP prescribed Codeine when I had sciatica but not having had this medication before I suffered from extreme constipation.

I feel that my problems have been caused by my body feeling so stiff after the treatment.My feet were affected too and I am still visiting a chiropodist on a regular basis.I also found that warmth helped eg hot baths,bean bags and hot water bottles.This was suggested to me by my physiotherapist.I hope you feel some relief soon.

Hi

So sorry you are suffering with the Avastin. How many to go ? When I first started it I had pain in my knee, which I’d had problems with before my diagnosis. I think it targets any areas of weakness or inflammation, especially any arthritis.

Paracetamol helped, warm baths with Epsom salts and gentle exercise. Also had some reflexology that seemed to help.

I used to be so stiff when I first got up, could hardly walk but after some laps of the bedroom much improved. It seemed to settle and definitely for me keeping mobile and walking helped.

Have you told your CNS team, they should be able to suggest some pain relief . Your quality of life is important and I do know of ladies that decided to stop their treatment early as it was too debilitating.

Hi Kim, I’ve only just started my Avastin treatment. I have a year on Avastin to go! That’s why I have been quite worried, thinking is this what, it’s going to be like 😂

Sorry yes I should have remembered your previous post. You may find that it settles down once your body has time to recover from your last chemo.

My physio sessions arranged through the hospital also started just after I started the Avastin so they may have helped and we got our rescue dog so I was gradually doing more walking.

Definitely speak to your team to see what pain relief they suggest and if you can stay mobile with gentle walks. I think I used to find I was more comfortable in bed if I did a little walk early evening but that may have been with the chemo.

My daughter was just going off to uni at UWE Bristol when I was diagnosed, (nightmare timing !) I had to convince her to still go and remember hobbling round Bristol ( so hilly !) when we went to visit in between my chemo. Shes now finished her graphics degree and has her graduation in July. 🎉

Take one day at a time and before you know it you’ll be sharing graduation photos. My next goal to get my 26 year old son settled with a partner. LOL now there’s a challenge!!!

Have you tried Epsom bath salts? I found they helped

Hello Georgiatec. Poor you! I'm on Avastin and now have polymyalgia rheumatica which is excrutiating I'm on Oramorph, have a Buprenorphine 10 mcg weekly patch and Co codamol. To top up, I'm also on variable dose steroid prednisolone which has caused weight gain. Best thing is to discuss pain management with your oncologist and get the right relief for you. Hey Georgia,

I've been on Avastin a few times now and getting ready to be on it again. I find that the more I do light exercise (even when I don't feel like it) the less achy I am. Getting in the pool, easy yoga stretches, and plain old walking kind of loosen everything up.

Since I'm no longer allowed to take any anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), moving and stretching has become my painkiller. What I have found is that the less I move, the worse I feel (more fatigued and achy). Even just putting on music and doing heavy cleaning helps. It wears me out, but my muscles and joints feel better.
