My mum received the news today that she has stage 4 chronic kidney disease and can have no further chemo. She has stage 4 ovarian cancer and has had 3 chemo sessions so far. A recent scan showed the cancer has shrunk in one area and stopped growing in the other, however no more chemo is possible.
Ascites has also built up for the second time and will need to be drained too.
Just wondered if anyone else has been in this position and if there is any chance of the kidney function recovering and having any more chemo in future, or if any treatments might be possible. She has her next hospital appointment in a few weeks.

I'm having problems with kidney function on my clinical trial - my kidneys were damaged by frontline chemo. Not all the trials seem to have the proviso of good kidney function so worth asking about this. Get a second opinion if necessary- this is how I got on my phase one trial although my kidney problems were not showing up when I was accepted for the trial.
My kidney function improved from 38 to 57. This was with extra fluids and no chemo. Treatment does wreck your kidneys. There are kidney forums on FB with lots of help.
Has she been told chemo has stopped because of kidney function? Some affect kidneys more than others but it may be because she isn’t strong enough at the moment. My team tell me the side effects outweigh the benefits so perhaps a good talk with her team is next
