Hi , I had a drain when first diagnosed , I had distended stomach and was in a wheelchair as I couldn’t breathe well. Drain was fitted under local anaesthetic, just a bit uncomfortable . They then drained me of 10 litres of fluid over 12 hours .Its not continuous they stopped every two hours because your BP can plummet .As soon as they had taken the first two litres I could walk to the bathroom .I lost two stone overnight with the drain . Not the most pleasant thing in the world but not as awful as it sounds . Xx Julia

Hi Jules. When I was diagnosed in mid June 2017 they took 15 ltrs out of me. I was awake and they just did a local on my stomach. Honestly, the only thing I remember about it was feeling better and better the more fluid they got out of me. Before they drained me I couldn't eat, talk, breathe, not even a sip of water would fit into me. I don't remember pain and I was wide awake and having pleasant exchanges with the team doing it. In the grand scheme of things my memory of it was that it was no big deal and BOY did I feel better afterward! I literally felt... cured!

Hope it goes well...mine was fine going in (under local) and the relief of getting rid of all that fluid was amazing! When it came out an inexperienced registrar tried pulling....she didn’t realise that the end inside was curled on itself to prevent it coming out! Luckily the sister heard my squeals and put her right....xx

Hi Coxsar, the good news is that you should feel so much better after the drain - it is literally a weight lifted off you. I had a drain in September 2007 so a bit hazy but I recall them rubbing some local anaesthetic on the side of my abdominal area, putting in the stent with a tube. I stayed in overnight and 5 litres of fluid was drained off. I could sleep and breathe so much better after that. Wishing you the very best today. Tell us how it goes.

Hi Coxsar.

I e had two drains for ascites when I was diagnosed two years ago. It’s not that bad. The relief is immense. I had 9 litres drained then three weeks later another 5 litres drained.

My nurse is trying to arrange a bed for me today as I need it doing again. All I can do is lay down. Walking exhausts me.

Good luck. You’ll be fine. You’ll feel much better. Xxxxx

Hiya. I can only concur with the other ladies. Having 5 l of my ascites drained shortly after diagnosis was godly. Inserting the drain or the actual draining did not hurt at all for me, which is saying something.

It did run over the course of a few hrs though.. but it was well worth it. Could breath and move again afterwards. Hope it will help you too. All the best, Maus.

Agreed doesn't hurt and worth the relief! Only bit I hated was the tube got stuck on way out but that's unusual...they drained me twice...8litres then 7...left with tiny dot scar thats it. You will be grateful to have the relief I promise xx
