So my Mum is in day19 after Caelyx and Is in hospital as I write this, not eating, very weak, had severe indigestion and unable to pass urine her stomach is very swollen so she’s retaining water that will need to be drained under a local anaesthetic tomorrow we reread the document given and there was no mention of this ‘side effect’ ... now questioning the course of treatment chosen 🤔

I'm sorry to hear your Mum has been having difficulties, DeeLee. Hoping that draining the fluid will relieve some of her discomfort. Perhaps while in the hospital tomorrow you can talk with her oncologist about the treatment plan. I've not yet had Caelyx so I'm unfamiliar with all the side effects, but I'm sure the ladies here will rally and provide you with info. I just wanted you to know that we are here, we are listening and we are praying for the best possible result for your Mum (and Dad). They are lucky to have you and your compassion, your strength and your support.

Sending strength to your Mum.

I do hope she gets some relief soon and that they are able to sort and resolve the difficult symptoms....

I didn't get ascites on caelyx, but I did get pleural effusion - also not 'listed' as side effect but I suppose another type of water retention.....?. Plus I lost a lot of weight and felt very weak. Caelyx is not the answer/cure for a lot of women and can cause more problems than it solves...

I would suggest searching for posts about this drug ( including mine... ) and ask questions about its efficacy for your mum

Let us know what happens

All the best...Janet 🌈🤞🏻💓

They’ve told us it’s the cancer not the chemo ... phew, she has a drain in and they have removed 3.5 litres already .. another night in hospital but at least she’s smiling again 💕

Hi DeeLee, my Mum also suffered side effects after having Caelyx. She was hospitalised after day 9 because she wasn’t eating & had begun vomiting. She was also suffering from tense ascites but this was symptom caused by the cancer, not the drug. She had already had one drain prior to receiving Caelyx & her oncologist suggested that the ascites would not improve until she had had at least two rounds of the chemo.

My mum had had two previous rounds of chemotherapy with carboplatin & paclitaxel which sent her into remission, however when the cancer did come back, they said it can become more resistant to some drugs which is why they decided to try Caelyx. She suffered the common side effects of the previous drugs, but nothing that she wasnt able to manage, however she had never actually vomited until she was given Caelyx. She was so sick & nauseous that she couldn’t take other tablets such as paracetamol or anti sickness pills as a result. She also found her vision was affected quite badly (blurred vision) and her hair began coming out in handfuls. She also became very constipated, but again I believe this was partly due to the drugs and partly due to the cancer. After a week in hospital, unfortunately her oncologist made the tough decision to stop treatment as the drug was just making her more poorly which obviously was not the aim.

I hope your Mum improves following the drain & is well enough to continue her treatment 💛
