Please can someone tell me if a CT scan can definitely detect ovarian cancer or is it only at the operating stage?

CT and diagnosis
Hi - My CT scan showed cysts on my ovaries and other suspicious looking masses in other areas. I had a biopsy done on fluid taken from my abdomen and cancer cells were present. Also my CA125 which is a cancer marker was 1500, it should be under 35. I started chemo with a view to a debulking operation after 3 sessions then more chemo. My understanding is that they grade the cancer after the op, I was told that the gynaecological oncologists are used to reading CT scans and although my cysts have not been biopsied they say they are cancerous.

Hello there,
A CT scan can’t definitely detect ovarian cancer but it will usually confirm the prescience of abnormalities such as masses or nodules for example.
Sometimes these are benign and sometimes malignant but they can only usually 100% confirm it after the surgery and histology testing, which is what happened in my case.
I hope this reassures you and if you are going through diagnostic tests at the moment that it all turns out ok, if you do get a diagnosis then the ladies on this site will be a great source of support to you,
Best Wishes

A ct scan together with the blood test 125 can give a fairly good idea of what is going on in your body prior to surgery. If you need surgery, then biopsies are taken during this and sent to lab for results. The biopsies do help the surgeon come to a decisions about the next step
The only way to confirm is through histology. They can tell you their suspicions but that’s all. I was told a simple cyst but unfortunately the cells inside had mutated

I was told I had OC based on ultrasound,CA125 and age.
I then had CAT scan to confirm no spread.
Not one of us is the same, that it why it is so difficult .
I then had debulking and chemo afterwards.

I was told based on ultrasound, CA125, CT scan and analysis of the sample of the ascites they took from my abdomen. The grade and type of cancer came after the operation and analysis of the tumours they removed. Mine they think started in the Fallopian tube.
I was told after ultrasound & ct scan that I had a tumour they thought was cancer. They confirmed it for sure after surgery & histology
I was prepared for it to be cancer based on ca125 and ct scan which showed endometrioma and complex cysts - until surgery they wouldn’t call it either way - surgery didn’t show up any areas of concern other than this mass but biopsy revealed spread and another primary in womb - it’s part of a jigsaw puzzle and sadly for the nerves only surgery/ biopsy can reveal the true extent of the burden of disease x
