Missing chemo

I’m currently on avastin and doxil. I’m going on a vacation and am thinking of skipping one round of treatment so that I’ll feel better and these mouth sores will go away. The way my treatments are scheduled this will mean it’ll be a month between treatments if I skip one. I guess I’m scared that doing this will hinder my progress. My oncologist says it should be fine but I’m scared. Am I being overly cautious?

If your oncologist says it's ok it probably is!

My oncologist at The Mayo Clinic told me that they prefer that a break during treatment not be any longer than 6 weeks, so a month should be fine. I hope you have a wonderful vacation and the very best results from your treatment! 😊 xx Gina

They told me that it’s to improve quality of life and there’s no harm with a break. I had Avastin delayed because of sepsis followed by a secondary infection. So I think it was five weeks between treatments one and two.

I’m confident they would say if it was a problem.

Thank you for taking the time to reply! Having cancer is just so scary.

Aren't you just postponing/rescheduling rather than skipping one?

A month between treatments isn't unusual. When I had caelyx it was monthly, albeit with carbo rather than avastin.

Have you tried bicarbonate of soda for your mouth? Cheap and cheerful and works.

Holidays are good for us too! Go for it.

Yes you’re actually correct in that I’m postponing my treatment for two weeks. Thank you for the suggestion of bicarbonate of soda. I’ll certainly try it.

Loads of people have a short postponement for many different reasons and it doesn’t seem to be a problem so go for that vacation as it will do wonders for your well being and give you strength for the rest of the treatment. Have a wonderful time xx
