can anyone tell me how to increase these....I've been put off so many times on more than one occasion because they were too low for my scheduled chemo....is there anything I can eat to boost them up?
Im worried because I'm not getting the chemo as scheduled and I think the cancer isn't being knocked out at the right time.
Thanks!

Papaya and beetroot are supposed to be good. I had low platelets before my final round of chemo so tried papaya - no idea if it worked, but when I was rechecked my platelets had gone back up!
Thank you...I"ll pick some up tomorrow....it's worth a try...
This is a side effect of treatment and they do come back up again try not to worry, I am interested in the idea of beetroot , it is good for the liver function
As others have mentioned - papaya seems to be beneficial. I believe that you can buy teabags made from the leaves of the papaya. Make sure you eat the flesh that is close to the skin - that's where the goodness is.
I don't really know about this but can a blood transfusion be done? If this is causing the treatments to be rescheduled so much, can the medical team do something about it?
I bought some papaya today....i did get my chemo yesterday..i was on borderline ...i repeated the blood work in the am....after the day before one onc said she'd put me off a week but i insisted in checking again in the morning and they came up to borderline. The Dr said just eat well and rest...I do eat well but I dont rest as well as I should...don't sleep well...Thanks for you input....its very helpful
Oh I'm glad you insisted and got the test in the morning of the chemo. Apparently it is when you rest that the bone marrow really kick-starts the blood cell production so even though it's really difficult to get rest sometimes, keep that in mind Herbal teas are good for relaxation too; if you got sage or rosemary growing, just stick a few leaves in hot water as a nice infusion (although it does take a bit of getting used to!)
I used to have a low platelet count on so many occasions. It was so frustrating and used to get me down. It is still low since I finished back in May but then that is because I have portal hypertension. I tried eating more red meat, papaya and felt this helped me a bit. Good luck x
Try eating/drinking POM juice or the whole pomegranate. My platelets fell low many times on chemo but managed to work their way back up. My ONC nurse said that after they hit their low point the rebound very fast. Mine sure did. just eat a balanced healthy diet and they should rebound on their own.
I don't want to alarm you but low platelets are potentially very dangerous. Platelets have to do with clotting and if they get too low and you bump into something, for example, you could bleed internally. My platelets were dangerously low after my final round of chemo. All my blood levels were low and I was severely anemic. I had an emergency transfusion and luckily my platelets also started to come back. The next step was a platelet infusion. Ask.
Hi My platelets were low, they nearly didn't put my portacath in, but I said I was starting beetroot juice and it has worked well, I had 4th cycle of 4th round chemo and although feeling very tired all my bloods were OK. Love Bridie xx
