Low neutrophils

Hi Ladies I just had a call from the hospital to say my neutrophils are low and they have asked me to have repeat bloods tomorrow. As you know I'm due to have surgery on Mon, if my bloods are still low what will they do, will the surgery be postponed?

I don't know the answer to that question but your CNS nurse might be able to advise you on hospital policy. It's always so depressing when things like bloods take a plummet at the wrong time. I had low white blood cell count last week. They retested it a week later and it was fine.

Hi, hopefully wont be postponed-they can always give you GCSF injections to get your neutrophil count up this week- good luck xx

I hope your count comes up in time, but, if not, don't worry. Your surgery will go ahead anyway - I know, the date means so much to us. But surgery is often delayed for all sorts of reasons, I had a hysterectomy delayed years ago because I had flu - the secretary told me, the anaesthetist would turn me down anyway. An anaesthetist I knew confirmed that, and told me not to be silly and turn up in a hospital with flu, because I'd quite reasonably be thrown out, because of the danger to other patients.

As Bob Marley said, 'don't worry, be happy (roar in your case) because everything will be all right…'

Two things which I've had to boost them: G-CSF injections and blood transfusions. I hope you can check it out with the CNS. I'm sure you'd prefer to stick with the date and fix the blood if possiblei to do this.... Best of luck. Chris x
