Hi Ladies, I had my total hysterectomy and appendix removed on Thursday afternoon. I am home now recovering. When they removed the catheter Friday morning I was able to pee, but by Friday tea time I was in such pain and bloated. Not able to pee anymore. So they have send me home with a catheter and I go back to the ward Monday for the day to try again. Did anyone have this happen to them after surgery? My surgeon thinks my bladder has been disrupted so much with surgery in August and again a few days ago it has gone into shock. But he also said be prepared to need the catheter or to be taught how to drain my bladder myself for a few weeks. I only have one kidney so am slightly worried about the impact it may have on that. Forgot to ask in hospital. Xx

Post hysterectomy
I had this problem after 2nd surgery I failed 3 trials without catheter and failed them. I had the catheter in for 15 months but kept getting infections. I currently self catheterise twice daily and the rest of the time void myself. The self catheterising is a lot easier and less risk for infections.
Thank you for your reply. This is my second surgery as well, my first was 3 months ago and I didn’t have this with the first one. We’re you able to go to the toilet but not empty your bladder fully?
I remember the wee sensation feeling a bit strange after! But not uncomfortable just strange. Can you ring your GP or 111?
If your not part of any of the facebook groups for this I would also join one and ask there as the ladies are really helpful xx
I understand where you are coming from I also have only one functioning kidney, it malfunctioned back in May and I got a neprostomy and then a stent. So the stent is due to be replaced next Monday. After the surgery I did have a Catherer and was loathe to have it removed but eventually I agreed and everything was in working order. Hopefully its your body settling down and you will have more success next time they remove it. Think of it as just a blip.
I hope your catheter issue has resolved itself. I was in the hospital last February for 5 days and came home with one. Not fun. My son was great through it all. I had to watch a video and he sat and watched it with me. He brought me home and even helped me with cleaning it and was a real trooper thru it all. I hope you have a good support system. I wound up not having to go into a nursing home. My son moved me into a house right across the street from him so now I get to see my 4 grandkids whenever I want. The kids are great. Yesterday my grandson brought me a Little Caesars Pizza. He agreed to mow it when it needs it. I wish I felt better and could do more myself but I am having to quit chemo because my platelets never went back to normal. They are still below 75,000 for an entire year. So my numbers are rising. My entire body hurts and my left leg has really swelled up. I was able to get rid of the catheter finally. Now we are having to stay home due to Covid 19. They cancelled the MRI of my liver, cancelled my port flush (which needs to be done monthly for 2 yrs). It is re-scheduled for July. They are doing no surgeries at the hospital! Everything is on hold here. We are up to about 77,000 deaths in the USA. We are being told to wear a mask everywhere. Somehow I am going on year 6 of surviving this Granulosa Cell Tumor but am at Stage 4 now. Stay safe!
Hi, after my operation almost 6 years ago my bladder was affected, in the opposite way I had no control whatsoever. The doctor said the bladder had gotten such a traumatic shock that it would take a while to recover.
It did improve slowly and I am 90% back to normal now so hang in there things will improve for you. Best of luck in your recovery.
