Ovarian Cancer Tests

I have had my first blood CA125 blood test this week but my GP has sent a letter asking me to repeat the test in one month without an explanation.  Surgery is now closed for today.  Does anyone know a reason why this might be?

Thanks Barbara

Hello Barbara,

I don't know for certain but an elevated CA125 can be caused by a number of things and apparently the trends are more important than an individual value hence the reason why they do the test regularly! Not sure if this helps!!

Thank you for that, yes it does help.  I'm trying not to worry until I have something to worry about.

I would imagine your gp is being careful to monitor you. There have been new guidelines rolled out this week to General Practitioners on the diagnostics for Ovarian Cancer, perhaps this is part of the new criteria. I am just guessing because I havent seen the guidelines. Ring your surgery tomorrow to speak to your gp so you can have a worry free weekend. Best wishes

I would say it's to monitor whether it's changed or not.

I asked the same question...CA125 also picks up any inflammation in the pelvic area too...it's a measure but it's always good to ask...it's your body and you need to know.

Not sure of your age, but CA125 can vary at different stages of the monthly cycle.

I'm nearly 61. Had a hysterectomy 10 years ago. It's in my family and breast cancer

Well there is your answer, he is being careful because of your family history.
