As I understand it, there are different types of calcium, and they are not all equally absorbed. I was told that calcium citrate is best if you can’t get sufficient calcium from your diet. I am easily getting 1200 mg by drinking three 8 oz glasses of skim milk daily.

3 glasses of cow's milk is approximately 900 mg of calcium (each 8 oz glass has approximately 300 mg of calcium).
I have seen tums listed as an acceptable why to take calcium in a supplement form. Just note, you need to play close attention to the amount of calcium per pill. It should be listed on the bottle. The front of the bottle of generic tums that I have says 1000 mg but on the back of the bottle under OTHER INFORMATION it lists that each tablet contains 400mg of elemental calcium and the 400 mg is the number one to go by for calcium supplementation.
I don't take tums for my calcium supplements because they contain sugar (dextrose) and I try to avoid sugar in my diet; however, I have a family member who is older who has trouble swallowing large calcium pills, and I am getting her to take Tums because because they are chewable.
