Treatment for Osteoporosis - not started.....yet.....

I may have stated this before, I'm not sure. I have my 2nd appointment with my rheumatologist in a few weeks. I've been reading a lot about the medications for osteoporosis. The injections I don't seem really concerned about the side effects, but the maintenance treatment after that period is quite concerning to me. The side effects seem almost as bad as not treating. Can anyone provide their experiences with the injections and post-injection treatment or no post-injection treatment? Thank you. JoAnn

Which medication has been recommended to you?

Forteo injections will probably be prescribed at my next appointment later this month. I don't have any issues looking at the reports on the Forteo. However, after the Forteo treatment I'm not sure what I want to do. Granted, that may be 1 1/2 to 2 years from now, but the maintenance drugs after the injections seem to have awful side effects which seem almost as bad (to me) as not treating at all.

Have a look at this for some ieas on how you can stabilize your bone density. By the way, have you been checked for "secondary causes of osteoporosis"?

In the process of looking for those, if any, now. Doing bloodwork, urinalysis. Thank you!

I know a surprising number of people I encounter on the forum are diagnosed with a problem with the parathyroid glands, and once that is sorted the bone density can begin to return to normal!

Wow, that's great news. Hoping my issue will be that simple to resolve. Thank you!

It is very good that you are being properly assessed. At the very least they need to make sure the medication (if any) will actually work! And as my story says there are ways to improve bone density without medication. Of course if you have ever had a genuine fragility fracture I will not attempt to dissuade you from taking medication, but I do think no matter what that doing all the natural stuff even if you also take medication will do no harm and can only result in better overall health anyway.

No fractures here. Dr. asked me "you haven't broken any bones yet?" I'm open to all options. Thank you!

All the best. There is growing evidence that nutrition and exercise can help restore lost bone density.

Please check my prior reply to you about my maintenance for three years after the conclusion of Forteo. In November my doctor and I will discuss the next type of maintenance best suited for me after the Reclast infusions . I'll post want is recommended FOR ME after that November meeting. Take care.
