I have a hiatus hernia too which doesn't help my reflux which is chronic. I was on lansoprazole for about five years but it was found it was making my cardiac arrhythmias worse. I was changed to a H2 receptor Ranitidine that was stopped internationally due to some cancer concerns. I have tried Famotidine but not got on with it particularly well.
As I have slow gastric emptying reducing stomach acid production which is the remit of these drugs is not good for me. I rely on gaviscon advance which helps a bit. When my hiatus hernia flares up it makes matter worse. Have you asked about hiatus hernia repair.
I also have a small hiatus hernia take the same medication as you. I mentioned the mucous and cough to my consultant that I had read on Google that reflux causes this he said that it doesn't and I had a food allergy. I don't think I have I suck a small sweet that helps also chew gum for a short time but not mint flavour. I have been taking lansoprasole for several years. I know its not good but the natural methods don't help as well .hope yours improves x
