I have suffered with reflux for 20 years and have been taking PPIs in one form or another during that time. I've had many gastroscopies and none showed up any problems. I suffer from IBS but this has been controlled through following a FODMAP diet. I also have bowel loading sometimes. Recently my reflux has become extreme. It doesn't seem to relate to what I eat, like many other sufferers, it's there nearly all day. I have raised the head of the bed, I always wait 3 hours after eating before lying down. I'm not overweight, don't smoke, don't drink, eat a healthy diet - and still it persists. The pain totally affects my quality of life and I am really suffering mentally and physically. I am no longer a happy person, crying a lot and feeling so let down by the medical profession who only want me to keep taking the PPPIs. I am considering Nissen Fundoplication and wondered if anyone here has had the operation - especially if you live in Australia!
Anyone had Nissen Fundoplication? - Acid Reflux Support
Anyone had Nissen Fundoplication?
I feel your opinion and am sorry you are suffering. I've had Gerd for over 50 years.I recently had a severe, lengthy crisis that lasted over two years.I was extremely ill.Acid aspiration severely damaged my lungs. No drug including PPI's worked.I was waiting for fundlopication surgery.I read Dr.Louise Kaufman's book Acid Reflux Diet. An internationally recognised expert. I followed a strict alkaline diet for many months.Eventually things started to improve and I could eat without vomiting. My crisis settled to the point that I can now eat relatively normally and no longer needed surgery. Don't give up hope.
I
I had the Nissen Fundoplication. The surgery was very difficult for me , it took a lot time to recover. The reflux is not like before, but I still suffer- at nights and there are worse periods . Like you : healthy food ( I always ate healthy food, I do yoga and I am not overweighted. I am not happy person, I dropped PPI. My surgeon gave me PPIs after the surgery- it didn’t help before and didn’t help after . I dropped it - now I take gaviscon and Ezox. My quality of life is poor. After the surgery the doctor said- the success is only 95 percent- so you are in the 5 percent….
Feel really sorry for you. Mine isn't as bad as your but I have read of other procedures that are less drastic than the one you mention perhaps you could look into thise xxi
