Lpr with underactive thyroid

Hello, I'm new to the site but before joining I saw a link to an article about those with underactive thyroid actually having low stomach acid. Is there anyone else who has seen this. I can't find it now!

I have had underactive thyroid for over 20 years and I suspect my LPR actually started about 10 years ago but was only diagnosed last year. I was prescribed omeprazole and gaviscon advanced which I took every day for 6 months until my follow up at the hospital. I stopped taking them prior to going as I didn't want them to "mask" the symptoms. The consultant was very dismissive and said that it was now all OK. Sigh. Within a month my Dr put me back on omeprazole and now after seeing the post I mentioned above, I have decided this morning to stop taking them for a few weeks to see if my symptons change. Long term use apparently is not good for you! I've changed my diet as have so many on here, and if I do lapse for a few treats I'm soon reminded that it's not "all ok" at all.

Does anyone else suffer from saliva glands swelling up? I've had 2 ultra sounds done and told there is nothing sinister to worry about. My Dr won't do a Peptest as it's not primary care. Having said all of this I know I have to look after my health myself, keep eating as I do, ( I've lost a stone in weight) regular walking and doing 2 stretch classes at the gym per week. It seems my life is in my hands!

Hi, just a tip about coming off Omeprazole. Try to gradually wean off them, try every other day for a week, then every third day etc. I have tried to come off them several times over the years and if you try to stop quickly the acid rebound can be absolutely dreadful! Hope you manage to find the thyroid link. Best wishes.

yes I have found it thank you.....very interesting. I didn't think of weaning myself off! Just goes to show how careful we need to be with things that are supposed to help us. I've missed 2 days so will take it tomorrow and work from there. Thank you again.

Hi, I also have hypothyroidism and would be interested in the article. I have no idea if I have high or low acid but the test to find out doesn't sound very pleasant. Please post a message if you find the article you're looking for.

I googled it Jaffanut. My underactive thyroid is caused by Hashimoto'Hashimoto's disease and the condition is called Hypochlorhydria or Achlorhydria. If you google those you'll get more info.

I bought Dr Jonathan Aviv'Aviv's book on acid reflux or should I say LPR. Sometimes you need to take your own measures to help yourself!!

Let me know if you identify with any if those conditions

Hi! I have subclinical Hashi, just diagnosed last year but I already suspected it for years. Doctor can't give me medicine at the moment, but eventually I will be hypo. I'm having stomach issues for the past year and it still persists til now. Not sure if I have low stomach acid, my doctor didn't seem to link it to Hashi. Did you do any stomach acid test to know whether you have the condition?

in reply toLittlemitten

No I haven't had a test done. It probably wouldn't come under Primary Care so would have to go private. What has the Dr said about your stomach issues? I've got LPR so was put onto omeprazole but I don't take it now because I've completely changed my diet, but I might have to go back on if I get worsening LPR symptons. I dont know what it means to have subclinical Hashimoto. You must have symptons of some sort to prompt seeing a Dr?

This page has stomach acid tests on it, including the bicarbonate test.
