Help please!!

Had severe reflux since 21 (now 29)

Finally been recommended fundoplication surgery as medications aren’t working.

Really unsure on what to do. Consultant basically tried to talk me out of it even though he has said nothing else will work.

Reflux is unbearable. Waking up with hoarse voice and sore throat. Sometimes reflux comes out of my nose! Yep! How lovely!!

But also read some unpleasant stories from surgery. My biggest fear is that I’ve read people can no longer vomit! I asked the consultant about this as I work in a school and am prone to sickness bug multiple times a year! He said I would probably get the ‘gripes’ but be unable to actually vomit!! This sounds horrific!!

Any surgery outcome feedback would be greatly appreciated! (Positive or negative!)

thank you xx

There are also very positive outcomes from this surgery. I was offered it but my severe Gerd eventually got better following Dr.Louise Kaufman's Acid Reflux Diet.

Hi, my reflux has also been ongoing for the last five or six years, especially at night. I have to sleep propped up. I am on PPI's and Gaviscon, but still often wake with burnt sore acid throat. I don't like being on PPI's for so long, but like you, I am put off the N.F. op.. Have you looked into LINX surgery? I believe this is less invasive than NF, so perhaps after effects are not as drastic as not being able to vomit or belch. It might be worth discussing with your doc. Regards.

I was Ppi for several months - didn’t help. Then I passed the fundoplication surgery- it didn’t help so much. Then I got the pills again …. After the surgery is better then before . Now I try to get rid of PPI again

It’s a terrible drug. It caused me to fill ill every to weeks. As there is less acid in the stomach… for me it didn’t work. I am keeping diet all the time

hi, yes you are correct to be concerned about the Nissan Fundoplication procedure. I burp a lot and being not able to burp or vomit would be a nightmare for me. There are other procedures available: Linx, Refluxstop, Stretta, TIF (and possibly more). I am trying to find a surgeon to just reposition my stomach and tighten the diaphragm but they all want to do the fundoplication which I refuse to have. A child in America died after having the fundoplication because his mother had been giving him salt water in a stomach feed line and he could not vomit it back up, an extreme case I know but it just shows how (in my opinion) being able to vomit it very important. Good luck.
