Barrett's

just got a Barrett's diagnosis. 😩. Report said low tissue risk. Gastroenterologist wants a 6 month follow up. Pretty much feel like I'm staring a death sentence in the face. Really caught off guard. Sapped all the life outta me. Which in turn makes the acid worse. Anyone survive with Barrett's more than a few years?

"Pretty much feel like I'm staring a death sentence in the face. "

-------------

Is that what your Gastro suggested, or are you just letting your emotions run wild?

I would get a better definition from your doctor on "low tissue risk" and how it relates to your prognosis.

Just because you are diagnosed with Barrett's does not mean you have caner, or even will necessarily develop cancer.

15 years ago I had a diagnosis of Barrett's. On a follow up endoscopy five years later, Gastro called it a "touch of Barretts". Last year, a new Gastro said, he couldn't even see it. Oh, yes, Almost 80 now and still alive :)

Not trying to make light of your situation, but please get a lot more information from your doctors before sentencing yourself like that.

It's normal to be scared. I have no experience of Barretts. But I have had extreme, severe problems with acid to the extent that my lungs have became permanently damaged/ diseased. And things have got better. Hang on in there.Take each day at a time.I helped myself with diet and lifestyle changes.

hi I've had Barratts for 10 years. It started after the cancer I had and I'm still very much alive and kicking. Get checked every 2 years now. Just respect the fact it's there and keep an eye on follow ups etc. do take any meds they give you to help.

Thank you for the reassurance. It's still sinking in. I'll be okay🥰

Hi Boomee1954,People diagnosed with BE (not progressed to cancer) normally live to a full life expectancy. You are fortunate that this was caught early and your doctor is starting you on a surveillance program. Even if something shows up now they can take care of it early as they did with my stomach cancer that they found early enough to just excuse it.

I do understand completely the feeling you are having though. But I agree with others here to just relax and gather more information on what your doc said. Im not a doctor by any means but I'm sure if your doc said follow-up in six months that you are OK.

My story is here
