my son Jamie is 31 and has Down’s Syndrome. Jamie had aggressive Oesophageal cancer. It has not spread and has had chemotherapy and the next step is surgery. Are there any families that have had family members like Jamie who are going through or have gone through a similar Journey who can share any information on our to support Jamie l would be extremely grateful for any advice shared . Thanks Dawn

so sorry your going through this. My dad had surgery 7 years ago it was a long recovery but he’s elderly he still has his problems but is doing well pretty much has a normal life but has had to adjust to eating small meals etc. I do know someone in his 30’s that had surgery and is doing fine.

There are lots of hurdles to overcome but this forum is most helpful and everyone experiences different problems.

wishing you all the best x

You don't say what type of chemo he's had but if it's FLOT as per the norm, then he's already experienced feeling pretty grotty probably and you'll have been supporting him through it. Surgery is challenging because of where it is and recovery is generally long so he'll need you to guide and cajole and generally be there for him. I don't know anyone else with Downs whose had it but for now I would encourage him to be as physically fit as he can be and do the breathing exercises that the physio has given to prepare for surgery. It's a long old slog but take it one day at a time and you'll get through it. The specialist nurses are usually very good so make friends with them and whatever crops up there'll usually be someone on here who has experienced it and can offer advice/suggestions. Wishing you both all the very best

So sorry to hear this. I agree with what has been said. The good thing his age is on his side for a swifter recovery with less complications. I’m sure all the staff involved will provide excellent extra support for your sons’s needs throughout the process and for yourself. It is a long journey but take a week at a time and put your trust in the medical staff. Take care.
