Do you suffer from acid reflux or silent reflux. Symptoms include hoarse voice, hiccups, dry cough at night, metal taste in mouth, nausea, acid in mouth, bloating, heartburn. You could have this for years and not even know about it. This then can lead to gastritis. You may even have a hiatal hernia which causes this. Have you been checked for Helicobacter pylori bacteria. A large proportion of the population have this and you may need antibiotics to clear this up. this can also cause ulcers. First thing you need to do is heal the lining. Check out DGL tablets (Glycyrrhiza glabra), probiotics or probiotic food, Slippery elm and marshmallow root. Also check your diet. Alcohol, coffee, chocolate, tomatoes, spicy food, peppermint and lemon and acid producing food should all be stopped. Ibuprofen and NSAIDS are a big cause of gastritis. Are you taking the omeprazole one hour before breakfast and away from other medication. Unfortunately most of these things have to be implemented if you want it to heal unless you have h-pylori then you need a prescription.

Hi Mum007

I went for endoscopy in March just before lock down, they found 2 parts of my stomach were inflamed, they took a biopsy and said it was not bacterial, and referred me back to my Doctor, I was prescribed omeprazole 40g daily, I take them along with Tamsoline in the morning, and I take atorvastatin after my last meal about 7 in the evening, seemed to be making good progress, and then all of a sudden I am back to square one.

I have been on cosmocol since March for constipation, just feel so miserable at the moment feel sick most of the time, doctor put me on anti sick pills for 1 week felt like a new man, but after stopping taking them was back to square one.

Omeprazole was never meant to be taken long term. It is used to suppress acid in the stomach. Many people believe that they have too much acid but in fact as you get older you generally have too little stomach acid. So omeprazole long-term it’s not actually helping the problem. If you search the Internet you will find many articles on this situation. I find articles from kriss kresser particularly useful. There is also a book titled why stomach acid is good for you. I would definitely go down the diet route as I said before. Any fatty food is also particularly bad. Also any medication you are currently taking could exacerbate the problem. It’s slow progress but unfortunately doctors and gastroenterologists just seem to want to give you pills.

Agree with the PPI overuse in this case. (Unless your diagnosis has been confirmed as Chrnoic Gastritis?)

Good diet control+ coffee/smoke (either active or passive)/recreative drugs/ibuprufen types all stopped (at least for the time required for healing the stomach lining inflammation aka Gastritis).

Sometimes body just requires enough (basic minimum) movement for the bowels to work efficiently. Are you sure you are walking enough everyday?

How about reducing the PPI to half and then stopping it for a week or two to see if it helps gain control back to the body's digestive system? Simply if the acid is diluted too much your digestive system is going to suffer and the symptoms could be similar to initial except the sharp pains.

At times simply too much medicines in the stomach without enough food and liquid intake and exercise could be worst than the initial root cause symptoms.

Himauser

Today I am cutting my omeprazole down to 20m per day to see if it makes any difference, was diagnosed with mild inflammation of the stomach back in March been on omeprazole ever since.

The worst part of it is feeling sick most of the time, then I cannot function properly, and do not feel like eating therefore losing weight about 2and 1half stones since March, it's hard to get to see a doctor at the moment with the virus so feel like no one is listening.

I agree with you Mauser. I had Ivor Lewis10 years ago, I was prescribed Omep and dutifully took it for three years. I suffered reflux and acid in throat too often. I decided to take matters into my own hands. Stopped the Omep and concentrated on diet and smaller portions and having last meal by 7 PM. Today (83 yrs old) I eat a wide diet and aim for 2000 cals per day. Sleep slightly elevated and reflux is a dim memory.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have my procedure scheduled for 11/27 but have an appointment on 11/2 with another GI office to get a second opinion.
