Recurring Hernia

Hi everyone

I had my IL surgery in 2019 and since then have been unfortunate to have had recurring hernias. The first in 2020, then 2022 and 2023.

This week I’ve been told the hernia has reoccurred. Not as severe as the last one but significant enough that my surgical team have deferred immediate surgery to consider options.

They tell me I’m quite rare but not completely unusual! Has anyone else experienced anything similar ? If so what were your options and choices?

I’ve managed to stay so positive over the last 6 years but this one has really got to me…

Thanks

K

Is this hiatus hernia ? I had the nissan surgery in 2018 via day surgery . I was told to be very gentle with diet so I was on liquidised foods for a month , soft chopped for 2 weeks then slowly weaned onto solids . I still find white bread hard to digest and anything but soft meat hard to digest / swallow . I then had my gall bladder out spending 9 days in hospital with jaundice . Recently I had a well woman blood test and my liver function has to be monitored . From talking to women in the hospital it is very common that when you have an major issues with your internal organs - I am just talking liver , kidneys , digestive gut then its common for other things to happen and my surgeon couldn't say that my hiatus op was a cure all .

He advised minimal alcohol , classic med diet and told me I am what I eat . Advised me to keep my weight down with exercise and a 3 meal a day regime . Well it is what I already know but he really emphasised the eating as essential . Saying that I try but I still now have niggling things happening inside .

Your personal answers / issues need to be obtained from your medics . I can only tell my story and the gossip from the ward I was on but my simple answer is that many of these women , a few of my friends have similar issues of get rid of 1 and another appears - but not always . I now have every test going , ensure I get blood tests so if anything is wrong I know early as waiting list issues made my symptoms worse and my nissan op was more complicated with the delays of waiting 17 months for surgery .

I had a tear of 6 inches in 2022 as my consultant said things were getting cramped in my chest cavity, I am awaiting another surgery after being taken in a month ago . It seems that tears are possible , particularly if the op was done by IL, this normally takes around 10 years to come about. We can only be grateful that we have had the added years. I'm now 26 years post op IL and hope this surgery will be my last......but it's so much better than the alternative. Stay positive and a few months of taking it very easy is well worth it. Keep in touch with how it goes . All the best. Ray

Thanks Ray. Hope your surgery goes well..My first was a year after IL but my surgery was robotic….

Who would have thought we could walk around with our bowels in our chest??!

You take care

Hello KfromUK,I had the IL in 2017 and had two diaphragm hernias since. The second time the doctor didn't tell me and I was in agony for 18 month. I asked a similar question here. The support you get here is wonderful. Everybody is a little different. I still can't eat certain foods, but I keep on trying. Please do the same, hope you feel better soon. Take care.
