Hello, I’ve been taking Omeprazole 20mg for 10 years with no major issues..
about a month ago I noticed I was getting heartburn, went to my Doctor and he put me on Dexilant 60mg twice a day. It helped with the heartburn but I got REALLY sick! I had diarrhea and I felt just awful. I think the dosage was too high. I called my DR and he put me on Omeprazole 40mg twice a day. Well, that didn’t work either the heartburn got WORST!!!! I started experiencing hip pain while on the 40mg. So, I decided to go back on the 20mg as I read that maybe now I may be experiencing LOW stomach acid..
I talk to my doctor about surgery to correct my hiatal hernia and be done with this Omeprazole business. My doctor recommended a surgeon but warned me that surgery comes with it’s osn issues and that is not 100 percent effective. Most people experiencing problems swollowing after surgery and worst heartburn may return.
So now after all these meds I feel that my acid levels are off balance and I have no rest. I can’t sleep, the pain and burning in my stomach is horrible! Why did my 20mg stop working??? Next I’m going to ask for an acid test and maybe try 10mg???
Has anyone ever experience this?

I’m not sure I can help with what’s happened but 10 years seems a long time to be taking them. When I was diagnosed I was given a three month supply starting at 40mg with instructions to gradually reduce to 20 then 10 and then stop (but was told it’s very important to have a gradual weening off). I’ll admit I did extend this out to a few more months but it worked for me. I have had the occasional flare up when I take tablets for a day or so but nothing long term. I would be inclined to ask for tests to see exactly what’s happening and then you can take the appropriate action. I hope you can get it fixed soon I understand how awful the pain is. Best wishes.
Im 61 ,, had reflux resulting from a large rolling HH. I had a nissen 360 op in sep17 and i no longer take omprez or get reflux. Long term use of ppis is not good. Imo have the op. Look up lynx as an alternative
You say that 10 years is a long time to be on ppi meds’ , but years ago the doctors never told patients to stop and they kept issuing prescriptions , it’s only recently that they have discovered how damaging this medicine really can be .
I have a hiatus hernia and Barrett’s Oesophagus and have no choice but to be on PPI’s for life. I am on Lanzaprazole 30mg and have never had any side effects. I have been taking them for three years.
I am 22 and have been experiencing shortness of breath and air hunger, stomache pain (gets better when I eat), and excessive burping for the past 5 months. I’m on protonix, it doesn’t seem to solve much. I have an endoscopy Thursday and am extremely nervous it’s something serious. Does anybody have symptoms similar to this from hiatal hernia?
Dexilant is used to treat heartburn caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease ( GERD ), and to heal erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid).
I have had a hiatal hernia since at least 2006, but it don't cause problems until 2019.
For most people, the hiatal hernia will cause Acid Reflex. I take Omeprazole. I am burping surplus gas.
But, if your stomach hurts, maybe you have another problem ?
