I am 57, did routine CT scan in march this year, its showing my hernia needs repair and my bowel is in my chest now, doctors saying most likely i will get away with 5 keyholes stomach surgey scheduled for 8th june next week .. My acidity has gone up from last few months, i nearly had to to go to emergency for twice as the acid level was very high from last few months. I had ivor lewis surgery about 5 years back . Has anyone had a similar issue?

Wishing you a good outcome with your surgery. Acid reflux at its worst is awful. Best wishes for a good outcome, repaired hernia and reflux kicked into the long grass.

Hi yep, I had IL in 2009, all was good until 2 years ago when I had trouble breathing properly when doing stuff. I had a 120mm tear in diaphragm that needed repair due to most of my guts deciding to re-home themselves, surgeon said things were crowded 😁. Things are much better now, like you say done laproscopically so no more scarring and all has been good with that since. I still get acid reflux and at times have difficulty swallowing some foods , last endoscopy didn't get past larynx so waiting for a trans nasal one but everything is good really. I didn't expect to be here still when I was diagnosed so these little things are a small price to pay for my new extended life. 👍

Interesting to read that you had a "routine " scan . I didn't think this was offered .But perhaps you're not UK ?

I have a couple of hernias from oesphageal cancer surgery (roof top scar ) and one is large and aches /hurts .

I'm not sure if I should see GP .They weren't bothered several years ago when it was much smaller .

hi…

I had exactly same issue. IL in 2019 and most recent hernia op March 2022. I had extensive bowel in my left chest but they repaired it laparoscopically.

I didn’t get acid, but because of the spread info chest my breathing was impaired.

The op was a success ! I determinedly followed the post op advice. No exertion no lifting etc .,, please keep with this advice as it’s such a impactful operation good recovery will give you such quality of life

I am 58. Diagnosed and IL at 53. Hernia op at 57 Good luck with day x

Hello CopyapI had Nissan Fundoplication on the 2nd Feb due to similar issues. Mine was in my chest measuring 9cm. The surgery went well but a long.....recovery. I can now eat & drink normally. I had the 5 keyholes - not to worry you but it was extremely painful after & for a few weeks but the Morphine does the trick🙏

If you have any questions im happy to answer😊

GOOD LUCK🍀

I had an oesophagectomy at 48, hiatus hernia repaired and gall bladder removed at 49.

When I was 52 I had a diaphragmatic hernia, with intestine in chest. This was unbelievably painful and had an ambulance ride to A&E. Emergency surgery followed a couple of days later.

Unfortunately this failed and operation was repeated a year later.

All good since, but I did take my last recovery very seriously, trying really hard not to put strain on abdomen.

I do still occasionally get acid, but mostly can be traced to me being stupid.

Hernia ops were done laparoscopically with 4 incisions I think - losing track of which scars relate to which op!

All the best with your op.

About 15months after my Ivor Lewis op I had emergency surgery for a huge hernia where most of my bowel got into my chest. That was Nov. 2019. Let's hope yours gets done before it is an emergency, though admittedly I had no problems till a few hours before hubby called 999. I began to think it may be going again because of greatly increased reflux but, an endoscopy the other day just revealed food retention. Waiting to hear what is to be done. From what I see on this site, both these things can be part of the aftermath. We just have to look on the bright side that we are alive. My hernia nearly took the life the cancer surgeon saved. Hope all goes well for you on 8th
