Good morning everyone! I hope everyone is looking forward to waving goodbye to 2019! I know I am ! I’m currently on the wait list for therapy with the NHS and I understand this can be a long long time. I was wondering if anyone can help me with how I can look into a good private OCD therapist or counsellor is there some kind of list they are on etc ? Thanks everyone have a good day x

I can't suggest anyone, but if you do go down the private route make sure they are properly qualified. Avoid any that promise miracle cures, who don't explain exactly what the treatment consists of and who don't explain what the fees are likely to be upfront.

There are a lot of cowboys and charlatans out there, simply out to part you from your cash.

Although there is a waiting list for NHS treatment, it is usually worth the wait. At least you know that they are accredited therapists and that the treatment has been clinically evaluated. I've had excellent treatment from the NHS.

But there is plenty you can do in the meanwhile. There are some excellent self help books on the market that use CBT techniques that you can try out yourself.

The ones that I usually suggest are Overcoming Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and The OCD Workbook, because these have helped me, but there are plenty of others. They teach you to challenge the OCD and have exercises that you can adapt to your own problems.

Some are actually available on the NHS! The exercises are safe to do and there are questionnaires you can monitor your progress with.

Do post and tell us how you get on. And happy New Year for a new start!

I see a private therapist. It’s expensive but if you can afford to, I’d really recommend it.

If you search for the ‘counselling directory’ online you can find therapists in your area.

I’d suggest reading their profiles carefully - find out what issues they specialise in and make sure they are accredited with a counselling organisation such as the BACP.

You can contact a few - I always emailed as I hate talking on the phone - and see who you get the right ‘vibe’ from.

The first therapist I saw was from the counselling directory although was also kind of a recommendation from somebody I knew. She wasn’t right for me at all and I knew so from the very first session but I persevered (probably for too long - maybe 10 sessions) before deciding to end that. The therapist I see now is much, much better and I am glad I found her.

She also works for Mind and is very experienced, she just has a private practice too.

Some work from an ‘office’ (I don’t know what else to call it) somewhere and others from their own home.

My current therapist was absolutely everything on ‘paper’ I thought I felt uncomfortable about - not much older than me, works from home, VERY professional to begin with (didn’t feel immediately ‘warm’ in her emails etc) but she’s turned out to be brilliant for the most part.

Good luck. I hope you can find someone who works for you.
