Hi, well done for seeking help. I hope you get the support you need soon. I'm waiting for therapy too.

thanks - I hope so too, as I have had many years of dealing with people who are clueless on how to properly help me... 🙄😧

It's quite a common scenario. People are in pain from OCD for years before they get treatment, and then they often have to wait.

There are plenty of therapists who do know what they're doing, though perhaps you've had bad experiences in the past. I had a really incompetent therapist many years ago, who didn't even tell me I had OCD, let alone try to treat it. But I've had good experiences as well.

CBT isn't a particularly pleasant treatment and most of us struggle with it. But do as much as you can and it will make a difference to you.

Meanwhile getting a self-help book can make a difference. It can feel empowering knowing that you can do something about OCD.

thanks - I have already had many years of very poor quality cbt that has hardly helped at all (maybe like 2%) but i’m hoping to be referred to someone better - there seem to be a lot of ‘so-called’ therapists who don’t know what they are doing & waste years of your life & well-being... whilst still getting paid for not doing much - Terrible!!!

.. they shouldn’t be allowed to work with people unless they really know what they are doing!!! 😧

Have they been NHS therapists? Because mostly, they are very good. As I said, I had a particularly bad one many years ago, but I think he was a one-off, at least I hope he was! He liked to sit there in his cowboy shirt, smoking and drinking coffee, and asking me about my childhood! I told him I got a better response from talking to my dog! The private market is a bit of a minefield, as anyone can set themselves up as a therapist and there are many charlatans around.

I hope that the next one you are assigned to is a real help. There is an inherent problem with CBT, and that is that it is difficult to do, and causes a lot of upset. I've found that a gentle, unforced approach to CBT works best for me.

Sorry to hear that. I have too suffered for a long time 20 years this year. I have been on the waiting list for a year. I have now been given weekly therapy. I wish they knew more, I know exactly what you mean. I’ve seen many ‘specialists’ privately and I always know more than them. I wish to find someone who knows more. I’m struggling but never lose hope. I just want my life back. Hope it works out for you. Xx
