Hi I’m new to this kind of thing but my therapist said it might be good for me... I’ve had OCD for the past 8 months or so and it’s slowly getting worse and more intense and I’m struggling to ignore the thoughts and just wanted to see if this was something that could help me

I'm assuming that you've had a diagnosis from a doctor or psychiatrist. Medication can help enormously, though not everyone gets on with it. Don't be afraid to give it a go, if you're not already on it. The main medication prescribed for OCD is an SSRI antidepressant such as sertraline. I've been on it for some years and it's helped me a lot.

Medication can take the worst of the OCD off, but cognitive behavioural therapy is needed for most people with it. I shall post a few downloads below that you may find helpful. They give an outline of what you can expect if you are assigned to a therapist, but also what you can do for yourself. It helps to undo the OCD.

Self help books are useful as well. The ones I usually suggest are Overcoming OCD in the Overcoming range of books, which all use CBT techniques, and The OCD Workbook by Dennis Greenberger and Christine A Padesky. These books explain the various forms OCD takes and have exercises you can adapt to your own OCD.

Feel free to post again and tell us how you are coping. The following can be downloaded for you to keep.

Hey betharainy, ERP therapy and meditation have worked for me. Also, living a healthy lifestyle by exercising, eating healthy and avoiding caffeine and sugar has been beneficial for me. Peace be with you!
