Neck pain plus

My husband has awful pain in neck going down back. It is exacerbated by long walks which he loves to do. The anti inflammatory drugs are not hitting the mark any more. He is 78 and very fit. Any thoughts please.

Trapped nerve???

I have sciatica from wear and tear in the bottom of my spine. The pain is excrutiating if I'm not careful, long walks are a no no. I lost cartilege in my knees as well, they get very sore if I go too far. Walks round the block are the order these day :((

Thank you for that thought Chrisj. My husband also has the wear and tear at bottom of spine but that doesn’t seem to give pain any more. This pain comes from neck down side of spine. He can walk for a couple of miles then it kicks in and yesterday he was in awful pain on the way home. It lasted for most of the evening but today it has gone completely. It seems very odd.

It sounds like a trapped nerve to me but your gp is the best one to ask and get it checked out. When mine is bad it goes right down from lower back to my toes and at its worst I can't walk. It tends to disappear overnight. I've taken tramadol with paracetamol in the past to cope with it. I was offered "exploratory surgery" but declined when they said they couldnt guarantee to make any difference or fix anything and I got bad feedback from various sources so decided to leave well alone. Its been a problem for about 20 years.

The pain from nerves can be the worst, the less I do the better I am. xxx

Thank you for further thoughts. My husband is grateful and I think all that remains for me to do is convince him to pick up the telephone to his doctor. Aaaargh!

If he won't pick it up then you do it, get it sorted out.

I have Arthritis in my neck and sometimes the bone spurs aggravate a nerve. I get the pain you describe when I have been upright a lot and especially walking. I also have a horrible trigger point behind shoulder blade and I think motion of walking increases pain there and around my spine.
