Hi. I'm new here. Can anyone recommend any alternatives to naproxen. I can't take them now as have afib and on apixaban. I have knee arthritis and only ever took them for walking / exercise and pain going down stairs. I realise many are suffering much more. But now after about 30 mins of walking the back of my knee swells, I can't bend it backwards and I'm in pain. Dr has given me co codamol but they're not helping. Thanks

Knee pain can't take naproxen. Any suggestions please?
I can highly recommend Flexiseq gel. Expensive but worth it. Certainly give it a try. Is it bad enough for surgery?
No, because it doesn't hurt all the time. I've had very little dealings with the Dr until I had to go on blood thinners. He gave me volterol gel and just said I couldn't take nsaids. Thank you I will try your suggestion
What strength CoCodamol have you been given ?
Talk to your pharmacist. What suits one person might not suit another. Many pharmacists are happy to suggest something for you to approach your doctor with.
You could try a different way, so the painkillers become less necessary. Like Jalia, I use Flexiseq, a non-medicated lubricant for joints. When my knee is bothering me I wear a cheap elastic brace I got from my local pharmacy. Also I do exercises to strengthen muscles which support the knee.
If walking is painful you might get some benefit from using urban poles (a bit different from Nordic poles as you use them to offload weight from your painful knee) Look up activator poles rehabilitation.
All nsaids interfere with cartilage renewal, unfortunately, so shouldn't be used all the time.
When resting, elevate knee and use an ice pack (carefully and for short periods) to help with swelling.
Good luck!
I use Australian dream cream this stuff is magical for my Psoriatic Arthritis infested knees.
I have severe osteoarthritis and ckd also. I take two 650 mg caplets (1300 mg.) of acetaminophen (Tylenol) extended-release. I can buy 225 caplets for less than $10.00 at Walmart. Walmart's brand name is 8 Hr Arthritis Relief. It is recommended not to exceed 6 caplets and not more than 3 alcoholic drinks a day while taking it. Acetaminophen is hard on the liver. This seems to take away the some of my knee pain.
I get FLEURON and “Bodymune Joint Relief”. Both on Amazon. They really help. I hurt all over when I forget to take them or run out. So, I got subscriptions. My hands and wrists hurt a lot so I wash them in very warm water and that helps also arthritis gloves ( Amazon also) if I eat sugar or too many carbs I get inflammation so I try to stay on a low carb diet as much as I can. I hope this helps. I cannot take NSAID’s either. Tylenol is about all.
Hi Sue. I was just like yourself for 4 years. I was prescribed many different types of pain relief. 5 weeks ago I eventually had a total knee replacement, but just before this surgery I was taking dihydracodene and having regular steroid injections direct into my knee joint ( 3 monthly) This worked quite well for me up until I had to stop the steroid injections to prepare for surgery. That is when all my problems returned.
Thank you . I am now awaiting my referral to an orthopedic specialist as I have been having some really bad bouts of locking and cannot walk at same speed now. Not feeling too good. Hope your knee replacement is going well.
Hi Sue. MO from the UK. I've loads of creams etc, the best his the CBD oil in liquid form. I don't put them under my tongue but rub directly on the knee all over and behind it, or any other area that hurts. I've used 600mg in strength with knee braces, without that first morning application I couldn't walk. # inflammation behind the knee sounds like a Bakers Cyst/ Bursitis xx
Hope you get some relief xx
