I have been having hip pain now for almost 2 months,I mentioned it at my last rhumey app and she offered me an injection, I declined thinking it might just be a pulled muscle or something. However it has carried on for 2 more months so feel it maybe something more. It hurts to lay on my side, sleeping is a real problem as I have to keep moving around, climbing stairs is painful and it takes a while to get going when i have been seated!! I can no longer sit on the floor and cross my legs. My question is, is this connected with my RA or is it something different?? Also my neck seems to be having similar problems,Concerned really! Any advice gratefully received.x

Bursitis or not
Hi Topcat. Sorry you are having this problem. When you say hips do you mean in your groin area or on the outer bits at top of thighs where bum meets thighs? I ask because I get very achy and tight on these bits but when I asked my rheumy about this last June he said this isn't where hip arthritis is felt - it's almost always in the groin and up into the lower back. If this is where yours is then you should ask your rheumy or GP for x-rays or scans maybe - so you and they have a clearer idea of whether this is OA or RA. Good luck and i hope things improve soon for you. Tilda x
Thank you so much Tilda, the pain is on the outer side of the right hip mostly but a little on the inside as well but not really in the groin area.. That is worth knowing, thank you, on Tuesday I see my consultant and not my rhumey nurse this time so I will share it with him. Thank you again. Xxx

Do let me know what he says Topcat. Mine is not as severe as yours but it does bother me quite a lot some days and nights. I have wondered if it might be bursitis but the physio says it's just tightness too so I had given up thinking about it. My rheumy did a little demonstration on the telemed screen of whereabouts it affected the body if it was hip arthritis and it was very useful but a bit disconcerting! Good luck for tomorrow I'm seeing a consultant on Friday. X
Hi
sorry to hear you are suffering. I have bursitis on right side of right hip. I were diagnosed as having it in jan 2014 and i still have it now. Ive had physio, anti inflammorities steroid injections seen orthopardic surgeon had mri scan, xrays and the pain is unbearable every little movement is agony im taking tramadol but there not touching it, told they dont remove the bursa. I cant lay on my rite hip as it is too uncomfortable im seeing a pain clinic doctor and now waiting for what used to be called pain management and CBT ive been told ive accepted that im always going to have it and hopefully will also be able to cope with and control the pain. Im 39.
I understand the pain you must be in tresa37. I have trochanteric bursitis but the pain has been pretty well controlled since I've had adequate pain relief. I have RD & OA & my Rheumy referred me back to my GP to manage my OA. We discussed my options & she prescribed a couple of meds & arranged monthly pain relief reviews, starting at low dose increasing at each review until I had acceptable relief & I now manage quite well.
Just a little nod, this is an old post & you've replied to someone who's no longer a member, a grey avatar & Hidden where there would normally be a username means they've deleted their account since replying.
i have the same problem nd also told my rhumie doc and was told by her that rhueatiod arthritis does not affect the hip joints,,,,but the pain feels the same pain as my ankles knees hands so im a bit miffed by it
I had a similar problem but on outside of both thighs plus groin area was told this was bursitis it hurt when i got up from sitting and walking distances was going on a walking holiday and could only manage 3-4 miles before it hurt too much steoid inj helped but stii suffer a little from it think its all conneted to ra
Its more common with advanced RA I think and also with other sero negative forms of arthritis as well as OA but RA can affect any joints in the body I believe. Tilda
I suffered pain in both hips for a long time to the extent it was effecting my legs they felt heavy and kept me awake,i went to see my GP who referred me to the local hospital,to my delight they knew immediately what it was "Birsitis"the consultant gave me injections in both areas, this was done some 18 months ago and I have had no problems since, please dont hesitate these people see it every day and Im sure it will help you.Good luck
Hi guys, just to update you all, it seems when I saw my nurse last Tuesday she examined my hips an then said she didn't think it was Bursitis as I couldn't pin point the exact place of the pain on examination, she said its usually in a certain place! So I was sent down to x ray and had an X-ray on both my hips and neck ( as I am having pain in both ) if this shows nothing wrong there which she expects will come back negative, she has referred me to a physiotherapist for manipulation! I have low blood count at the moment so am waiting to see what the outcome is of this, as I already take injections to boost my vit b12. So will just play the waiting game now and see what they suggest. Thanks everyone for your help and support!!! Xx
