Can anyone who has surgery with an inplant.

Apart from a bi-lateral knee replacement, both done at same time, I have also had a bunion op. The screw is still in place and more than 5 yrs on the foot, toes and ankle are swollen.. The swelling came on gradually but suddenly excelerated.

The swelling is not in the area of the surgical scar but right over where the x-ray shows the screw is it is not painful.

My question is has anyone experienced the same thing? If so did you have to have the scew taken out, and did that improve things.

Hi, in 2007 I had a bunion op. There were 2 screws left in - were supposed to be permanent. One day in 2009 I was walking along and my foot felt like it had been stung, really itchy and quite painful. Took a look at it (in the middle of the street as I was hopping around) to see a red swollen lump sticking out of my foot just where one of the screws was positioned.

Anyway to cut a long story short (drs originally didn't believe me when I said my screw was sticking out and causing swelling until the consultant looked and went -'er how odd, yes it is'). So I had it taken out under a local anesthetic and it was much better, all the redness and swelling went and foot was (and still is) fine.
