Three Days and Counting.....

Three days left to be double-handed, before the wrist repair for the damages done to my right wrist from RA. It just went too far before the current drugs were introduced, damages already done can not be reversed. RA has destroyed all the cartilage between the bones of the wrist and hand, so they are rubbing against each other, over lapping and the ulnar bone has drifted away from the joint.. These three procedures will be done:

Synovisectomy, Distal ulnar resection, and Proximal Row Carpectomy. You can google these and see what they are doing.

Yuck!

So, in preparing for single-handed living single, I have gotten alot of Spring cleaning done that I won't be able to do for awhile. Also, in place of trying to prepare meals, I just bought 15 frozen Lean Quisine and WW meals, and a large, 3 pound bag of frozen California veggies. Lots of Cottage Cheese and yogurt, and grapes and strawberries for breakfast and lunches.

Laundry done, till I do the bedding on Saturday. My friends promise to be in and out, so I won't really be alone all the time.

Thus why I am such a strong proponent of Prevention, using the drugs research has provided for us, to stop the disease, or atleast, put it to sleep! Moderate to severe pain means the inflammation is still active and liable to destroying joints, cartilage and even the bones, if left to just coverage with pain meds. We need pain meds, but we especially need the anti-inflammatories, DMARDs and Biologics. We may have to push for these, to make sure damage doesnot happen.

Once the inflammation is under control, we won't need the pain meds as much.

Now, I think I have the Activities of Daily Living covered: Getting dressed, covered. Brushing teeth, with left hand awkward, but possible, sqeezing toothpaste by leaning the tube half over the edge of the sink counter and then leaning against it, while holding the toothbrush in front with my left hand. Tricky! Spreading cream cheese on the English muffin with left hand, not possible...the muiffin keeps moving! But thinking about leaning on it with my elbow to hold it still while applying the cream cheese. Or, I have a C clamp in my work shop. Having the cream cheese in a tube would not be any help, see notes about toothpaste! Peanut butter is no easier!

Could just skip English Muffins, but not an option. Did you know you can scramble an egg or two in a coffee cup, sprayed with non-stick spray, just use a fork to break the yoke and microwave for 1 minute. It's done, it's round and fits perfectley in an English Muffin.

I am aware of the possible difficulties ahead, but the options aren't so good either. I must do this so I can get back some normalcy to my wrist and hand. Walking with a walker will make it a bit testy, though I do not hold onto the handle grips now due to the problem with wrists. So I steer with both forearms. Works fine, I just have to be careful to make sure the right forearm doesn't slip with the bandage or cast on it. Won't know which he will use until I wake up.

On the 19th I have to go back to the big city of Cleveland to have dressing changed, get xrays and take them with me to see the surgeon. At this time he will explain to me exactly what he did and why., and I will see this fine gentleman once more. I have to ask him "Will I be able to play the piano?", and he'll surely say, "Oh sure", and I will say, "Oh that's wonderful, I've always wanted to play the piano" :) I'll be back! L. xxxx

You reminded me of when I was in hospital after having joint replacements in my right hand. The morning after breakfast was brought in and I thought that toast with jam would be the easiest to eat (hand which had been operated on was stuck up in the air tied up to a rest keeping it upright) I was mistaken.

Even the lady dishing out the breakfast laughed when she and I realised that there was no way I was going to be able to spread the butter and jam so she did it for me.

The other thing which I found amusing was that when I was allowed to go to the bathroom on my own (hand still in protective dressing) I had everyone rushing about as I had pushed the emergency button and didn't know. (Definitely off putting).

Take care, hope all goes well for you, you seem to be well organised.

(Having read a post on here relating to manicures etc. have you cut your toe nails?) Don't think your friends will take too kindly to that job!

We will all be waiting to hear all about it after you've had your op (obviously as and when you can manage to post again).

Keep smiling

Did the toes, but not easy. Wrist not strong enough for the clippers. will let the podiatrist assistant do them next time.

It sounds as if you have been v well organised - but where's the chocolate/ doughnuts/fruit pies or whatever you count as a special treat? (for me it's cheese on toast, which I love but too rich for everyday) Surely you deserve one treat at least?

Anyway I hope Bridget understands, and will keep you company without wanting to lie on your sore hand.

Keep us posted when you can, and hope all goes smoothly and your piano playing days will soon be with you. Pollyx

Oh yes, Polly, I do have a few treats in the freezer, for when friends drop by. My stash of chocolate is on the refrig. door, so it's handy! LOL at myself: Yesterday, I had a bag of old-fashioned Root Beer barrelss, wrapped individually in a bag, so I cut the ends of each one and put them in a pretty dish on the dining room table. Won't have to try opening them with my teeth.

Bridgie will def. sit right beside me, she is so affectionate., we have nose rubs. Maybe she is an Alaskan :)

I will try to type with one hand, to atleast let you all know I'm OK.

I think you are ready, Loret. I dare you to say your piano joke to your Dr.

If I lived closer to you, I would come visit during your recovery. Ohio is so far away from Nebraska. I could not afford gas in my jeep & I've never driven more than 11 hours away on a trip by myself.

Good luck to you, don't try too much too soon, and keep on top of the pain meds.

Christine

in reply toTinwoman2

Thanks Christine. I'm thinking I will be fine. Today I am waiting for the OR nurse to call and tell me what time to be there on Monday, but imagine she won't call until 4pm. It's only noon now.

You are very right about driving cross country. My brother in Denver gave it up, too tiring and expensive, plus they have a motor home, and were pulling a car to drive around when they got to wherever. The gas would be dreadful, at about 5-6 mpg!

Aw Scouser, that would be so fun! You wouldn't have to do anything at all, we'll just order Pizza delivery and sit and talk all afternoon!!

Aw, thanks Pat!

I do wish I still had my piano. I took lessons for a couple years, about 10 yrs ago, to keep my fingers active. Didn't work that way, had to quit when I had two trigger fingers to be released.

Appreciate all the kind words and affection I am feeling from all of you at HU. Be back soon. L.xx
