travelling with Orencia

I have just changed onto Orencia and the info in the leaflet makes no mention of how long it can be out of the fridge for. With Enbrel I had weeks so could go away without hauling cool bags with me, which was great. If going for a weekend could just pop sysringe in handbag.

But with Orencia?

Anyone know?

Thanks. That’s not good news😐. 8 hours is not long.

Off to buy a better cool bag I guess.

Can you special ones for medication? I’ve never traveled out of the UK with my biologics so it’s never been a problem.

Yes I have one that was fine for Enbrel and seemed to be ok. But since it didn’t actually matter if it went a bit over 6 degrees I didn’t worry overmuch. With this one tho’!

Keep a small cooler bag in handy, and if traveling you must need a letter específing you use Orencia from your Dr.

I take Orencia. I use a small freezer bag, just a normal one that people use to keep packed lunches cool, I probably bought it off Amazon. I put the injection in a small packed lunch box and chill it in the fridge so the air is cool, and the bag in the freezer, both overnight. Then the next day I put the box in the bag and it will stay cool for a day. This allows me to travel across the country to get to my parents and their fridge.

I have found hotels very helpful is storing the injection for me, but warn them in advance that it needs to go into a temperature controlled fridge, not just the little one in the room or a bar fridge. The fridge in the hotel kitchen will have regular temperature checks, so they usually understand what you mean.

Thanks. I’ve just ordered a small digital thermometer so I can do a test run on the bag. We will be doing a 2 day fridgeless journey in April so want to feel confident.

That's a good idea.

Remember if you are traveling you must ask you Dr,to guve you a letter indicating you use Orencua Pen, that is a must.

I think I got one from the pharmacy that supplies the Orencia, I can't remember if that was Lloyds Homecare or Sciensus at that point in time. Plus one from the doctor for the methotrexate because it's a cytotoxin.

Hi I’m on Orencia & travel abroad regularly. I have a sturdy well insulated cool bag given to my by a rep at hospital when Biologics first came out. I put the Orrcia box containing however many pens I need plus 3 large ice packs wrapped in tea towels inside. This is generally ok for about 12 hours. I do get hassle at customs at the airport even though I have all the correct paperwork. They are usually too busy to read it. I have also been involved with a company called Medigenics in developing a cool bag suitably big enough to take the Orencia pens which are bigger than most. Those cool bags have an inbuilt thermometer so you can read the temperature anytime. If I remember right they can last for 24 hours. The downside is they are expensive.

Thanks, that’s interesting. And yes the size of the pens is annoying, I only get a 1litre sharps bin so it fills up quickly.

I would ask for the bigger bin. the small ones are useless they fill up with about 4 pens. Mine is huge can fit about 8 months plus in it.

Sadly no choice as all that is on offer here! I have pointed out how wasteful it is.

I had infusions last summer while there was a shortage of Orencia & the nurse brought a small disposal box each time to put the 1 needle in. So I currently have 4 boxes. 3 small & 1 large. How silly you can’t get a bigger one. Like you say it’s wasteful.

Thanks I'm not sure my freezer bag is long enough tbh. Good idea though.

Yes Orencia can be kept out the fridge for couple of ours,a room temperatura,as long as sun does not face it.If you are traveling you must tell you zdr you are using Orencia Pen,andvDr must give you a letter reference orencia for traveling. And keep it handy for always traveling .Happy landing
