PEMF therapy

Hello you lovely people I was wondering if anyone has used PEMF therapy. My uncle was told to get a Medicur pro device and thought that it might help me with my arthritis. The device is quite expensive so I don’t want to spend out and find that it doesn’t help. I’m hoping that one of you out there has used one and can tell me how you got out with it. Did it help?

It looks like the NHS have approved it…why not ask you rheumy team if they can apply for funding ?

PEMF therapy device. The device, manufactured by BioElectronics, uses PEMF technology (also known as Pulsed Short Wave Technology) to provide relief from musculoskeletal pain. NewMed Ltd., the UK’s one-stop-shop for PEMF therapy, hopes this will raise awareness of PEMF therapy and its health benefits.

Hi. Had no idea what it is - went onto Science Direct which is usually a good source of unbiased info. They say that there are big claims from the manufacturers of the device with regard to its effectiveness in pain control but very little scientific evidence that it has any real benefit.

That answered my question - it may have answered yours……..😀

I bought a PEMF mat after I broke my wrist - I read a very good report - well scientific paper - about how they could help with repairing broken bones - if I find the link I’ll post it for you. . The following year I had a freak accident and managed to fracture my sacrum and boy was that painful, I was sure I would end up having to use a mobility scooter for the rest of my life.

Using the PEMF mat I was able to cut back on my painkillers - I was prescribed but was unable to take naproxen which left me with not a lot of choice. So I would start the day with two full strength paracetamol, then two hours later two ibuprofen, then two hours later two ibuprofen etc until I reached the max dose for both. I have taken hydroxychloroquine since 2015.

When I started to use the mat I was able to stop all but the occasional paracetamol every now and again. I saw a rheumatologist who was absolutely amazed that I was able to cope with only paracetamol every now and again. I’m not sure she took on board that it was my mat that was actually what was helping.

There are a few contraindications to using the mat so check them out first and you must also be able to lie flat on your back plus the mat I have has to go on a firm surface so I put mine on the floor, so you need to be able to get down to that level. I still use it if I have nerve pain in my lower back - it comes from long standing problems in my spine which is a bit of a mess.

So for me it’s Pilates, regular exercise, occasional physio, occasional paracetamol and my wonderful PEMF mat that keep me going and pain free.

I notice the price has doubled since I bought mine but honestly I don’t know how I would have managed without mine.

If you Google and read some of the reports you will see that PEMF has been known about for a very long time. I don’t suppose drug companies will have to worry about it because it is easier to take pills than to buy a mat and lie on it for twenty minutes or so twice a day although saying that I still take my hydroxy and I also take the occasional paracetamol as well.

I think it is something you need to have at home to use regularly rather than go to a clinic or gym. I used to get up, get washed and lie there for a while before breakfast then I’d do another session before I got into bed.
