Prednisalone : I have wrote recently about... - NRAS
Prednisalone
hydroxychloroquine has a half life if 40 days, which is saying it takes 40’days to drop by half, and 200 days to clear your system. Therefore it can be months before you see side effects reducing, unfortunately.
Do you always take your prednisolone with food, as it can cause peptic ulcers, which can present with increase in wind and belching. Also you should be using a proton pump inhibitor like Omeprazole or lansoprazole to reduce acid.
In 2021 when I fractured numb sacrum I was prescribed Naprixen by the hospital GP who diagnosed sacroiliitis which was a good guess but a private MRI showed a fractured sacrum.
Anyway I was fine on the amount of naproxen I was taking then,. The physiotherapist who referred me for the scans wrote to my GP to ask her to provide good pain relief and she increased the dose of naproxen and gave me omeprazole as a ‘tummy protector’.
Unfortunately I ended up with the worst diarrhoea I have ever had in my life plus my heart rate was so high I felt awful. I spoke to the doctor who said to stop the naproxen and to double up on the omeprazole which I also did. The diarrhoea etc kept going until after a couple of days I stopped the omeprazole too and lo and behold the diarrhoea stopped and my body went back to normal.
When I was first prescribed naproxen by the hospital GP I was not given omeprazole and I was fine, in fact the naproxen worked very well for the pain so I was surprised that the combination of naproxen and omeprazole was, for me such a disaster. I have had no gut problems and have not taken omeprazole since
Omoprazole doesn't suit me either
I suspect I’ve got low stomach acid in which case it really won’t help. There is a baking soda burp test you can do first thing in the morning and I never burp, so considering my age etc I think low stomach acid is a possibility. I have osteoporisis so I would rather modify my diet to avoid PPIs as I have done although I’m not sure if that works work for everyone.

I have a feeling I have low acid to ,I have osteoporosis also pernicious anemia can't and have b12 injection every three months ,I have been following Babara Oniel who talks a lot of sense in my eyes ,she says to get your gastric juices going is to squirt a few drops of lemon in water first thing in the morning ,my sister has tried it says it work ,I'm about to try it

Hi Alice
Yes, yes and yes again!!
Just as lockdown started I was prescribed Hydroxy as my Mthx alone wasn’t working.
I was fine for a few months, then started getting awful pains, mainly on my right hand side of bowel, I could hardly sleep at night. Then the awful gas and bloating, I felt like my stomach would explode. I called my Rheumatologist and she said it was probably IBS, nothing she gave me would cause those symptoms!
So I carried on with Hydroxy.
3 weeks later I couldn’t eat, terrible pains, then bloody mucus in stools, diarrhoea too.
I had lost about a stone in weight, felt absolutely terrible.
I eventually took myself off to A&E, they did a CT scan, but couldn’t find anything wrong.
They contacted Gastroenterology because my mum had Crohn’s and they said maybe it’s that. A month later I had a colonoscopy, I had lost so much weight, the pains were awful.
Colonoscopy clear.
Then I just decided to stop the Hydroxy. Told my rheumatologist I wasn’t taking it anymore.
I felt such relief over the next few weeks, eventually I began getting better, able to eat again, no bloating, no pain. But it took about another month or so for my bowels to fully recover, I was so tender on that side.
For me it was definitely the Hydroxy, maybe I had some sort of allergy to the ingredients? But of course everyone is different, so with you it could be something different. Keep an eye on it as with Pred I have awful indigestion, I take the coated ones now, helps a bit.
Xx
Hi Alice 70, I have had experience with both I don't know which steroid you're on or how you are taking it but I 100% believe that that is the the stomach problem especially if you are taking them orally. I didnt have that issue with the injections. If the bloating and gas kept on, I would treat myself to a peppermint or add peppermint to my tea.. The main problem I had personally with the hydroxychloroquine was that it made my heart flutter and beat crazy fast for no reason. Not all the time but at least twice a day at the minimum. Otherwise it was pretty much the only thing after trying multiple that gave me any relief. I hope this helps God bless and stay safe
