Rheaumatolgist trying me on different meds for example hydroxychloroquine now sulfasalazine both making me sick and upset stomache ,I believe it is not them and that it is the prednisalone that is doing it ,I've asked my gp could I try prednisalone gastric resistant his answer was that they don't work as well as the normal prednisalone, I would like to know if anyone else is taking the gastro resistant preds and are they working for them thank you

I’ve been on gastro-resistant prednisolone tabs for over 30 years. Due to having stomach and duodenal ulcers from Indomethacin (which is no longer prescribed) my stomach need protecting against any irritants. Uncoated prednisolone is an irritant and therefore why I’ve not been prescribed those.

The coated tabs work fine for me and my rheumatologist has never said otherwise though of course different docs have different opinions.

Your gp is correct, the same dose of enteric coated won’t peak as high in the blood. I have adrenal insufficiency and on steroids for life, without them I would die. However I’m not allowed to be given coated tablets for the reason I mentioned. It also takes around 5hrs to reach its peak as opposed to the 2hrs for uncoated. Do you take them after breakfast, and are you on a ppi? Here’s a graph that shows the difference in the 2 tablets.

I also have adrenal insufficiency and am on steroids for life. My gp doesn’t prescribe the coated steroids. I also take lansoprazole to help prortect my stomach

Over the years I’ve had Omeprazole and lansoprazole as a ppi. Unfortunately I have fused ribs, with no chest expansion, so have lung damage. I have several issues, one being micro aspiration, so my respiratory specialist changed me to Pantoprazole, which is stronger. I also have to take gaviscon advance at night to stop contents leaving the stomach.

Sorry to hear you also have AI, it’s frustrating having to think ahead for what your doing, and whether you need to adjust your dose, and even when you do it’s often not enough 🤗
