Hello everyone. Does anyone has flare up in the hip area and if you do : which part of the hip you experience a lot of pain? is it in groin or on a side, or anywhere else? Does the pain irradiate onto pubic area aswell?
WITH best wishes from Margaret

I was told by the hospital that it wasn’t possible to get RA in your hips and that the pain I was feeling was because of something else. The hospital have been really good, but everything they have said contradicts what I have read….
My first symptoms of RA started in my hips (and very quickly spread to all the joints that shouldn't be involved in RA). From MRI it appears that rather than synovial inflammation it is caused by tendon inflammation (tenosynovitis) which is also caused by RA.
After years of things going ok on methotrexate alone, I developed over time horrible pain in the hip, lasted for months, I was off work, walking with a stick, could hardly get in and out of bed or the bath. My Consultant eventually sent me for a nuclear bone scan which showed an uptake in my right hip, so then she did an MRI which showed severe synovitis - I even had fluid in the bone marrow as a result. She added in sulphasalazine to my Methotrexate and had another Depo injection. The SS with the Mthx eventually worked wonders, an MRI later said the issue was resolved - fingers crossed- I’m eternally grateful she took me seriously, as with the larger joints often there is no outward visible swelling. My inflammation markers were off the chart though, so she knew there was something going on.
I have had acute episodes of hip/ groin pain which have been put down to RA flares - never found another cause- sometimes short lived sometimes lasting up to a week . Has ruined a couple of holidays in the past - I have wondered if prolonged sitting ( on plane, train journeys) was a trigger
Outer side of hip was painful for several weeks before Christmas. Eventually I took 5mg pred on Christmas eve as well as the 10mg MTX. Repeated on Christmas day and pain went and didn't return for a couple of weeks. once i started dancing again, some niggles returned but not as bad. Rheumy happy for me to occasionally take the pred.
I had pain down my leg from my hip and I struggled to bend over; putting on shoes was a challenge and shoelaces beyond me. I thought it was just my RA but an X-ray confirmed that I actually needed a hip replacement. I’ve had no issues since the replacement. Have you had an X-ray?
I have had pain on outside of hip which was diagnosed as bursitis caused by ra. This comes and goes but is sometimes severe. I have had steroid injections in the hip twice in last 5 years which have been effective. Hope it clears up soon.
I would recommend you ask for an X-ray. I needed a new hip from RA damage to the joint. My experience was pain on the groin side and totally unable to stand on it. Pain on a specific spot on the outside is probably bursitis. Physios are really good at diagnosing this.
I have groin and outside pain at the same time right now! I had it before along with pain over the SI joint. When it is bad it also radiates down the leg. A physio said hip osteoarthritis, the rheumy said no, no sign of it on the x-rays. Finally did an MRI 6 months after the flare had resolved and said no inflammation. Now she totally ignores me when I say I have hip pain!
There is Hickam's dictum to remember: patients can have as many diseases as they damn well please! So it can be hard to tell what pain belongs to what condition.
For me, it's in the hip socket (side), radiating to the knee, in the groin area and in the sit bones. That means I can't get comfortable in any position.
