Stuck in bed today as in so much pain in both hips. Hurts to lie down, sit and walk- not sure what to do then! Am chasing hospital for review. Last time hips were bad they tested me for AS which was negative. Has anyone had a lot of hip pain from their RA and what helped? How do you know if it is bursitis? My pain is in front of hip where it bends, around side and in middle of both buttocks. Also strong pain down front and back of both legs 😞

My advice is make sure you get x- rays and scans . I was being treated for bursitis for years with steroid injections , then i had an MRI and found i had slipped discs and the pain was actually from trapped sciatic nerve as well . Now this has got worse and may need an operation. So do make sure to get correct diagnosis if you can . Best wishes, hope you get the pain under control.
It might be trochanter bursitis that a few people on here have suffered. It tends to be more painful at night with the pain worse when the affected leg is on top. A steroid into the bursa can give long-term relief. I believe that it is associated with back pain affecting one's gait. A physiotherapist diagnosed mine and referred me back to my GP for my steroid that worked very well despite the big needle!
I used to get horrendous hip pain. Both hips have been damaged. However, things are quite a bit better with the add of methotrexate. I would definitely ask for them to be x-rayed.
I do occasionally get acute pain which ‘behaves’ like other joints flaring - sudden onset of disabling pain resolving over days or weeks. But if youve got sciatica as well it sounds like lumbar spine problems - need proper diagnosis otherwise youll get the wrong treatment as wethervane said
Hi! Check into "Ileopsoas Tendinitis" or Bursitis." I have more problems with this than anything else. It is a "temporary" issue but it continues because it doesn't get the proper rest. More of a rare athletic disorder but common with an acute Rhuematoid Arthritis situation.
The front, slanted portion of the hips are weakened. Quadriceps and knees take the blunt of the work, causing breathing issues going up and down stairs, as if you are doing squats.
My doc is a lead Professor at USC, just kinda figured this out in me. Rest helps but it is right back when it is stirred up. This is a weekly problem for me.
Oh that's horrid. I can only suggest you talk to your rheumy. One of my gorgeous daughters has bought me a microwave hottie which looks like a weightlifter's belt. It fastens around the waist/lower back and is bliss to wear. My lumbar back/hips are stiff and sore this morning so on with the belt and it's easing things nicely. Maybe worth a try? Hugs
She got it from Amazon. It's from a company called Hotties Thermal Packs Ltd and they have a range of this sort of thing. Very useful if the wrists are a bit iffy. I hope this helps
Has osteoarthritis been ruled out? I thought I had bursitis, but xray showed hip joints "bone on bone". Had both hips replaced (one at a time) and no problems since.
