shingrix - Ay caramba! Anyone else with major sore arm afterwards?

hello friends

Well after being hospitalized with shingles in August I was determined to get the vaccine. Went this morning and my goodness my arm is so sore as well as tingles in little finger! I am used to basically nothing happening with flu and Covid jabs and sort of assumed the same here. I feel a bit rough too. Wondering what kind of reactions you have had?

I had my Shingrix and flu jabs on the same day but different arms obviously. No problem with the flu arm, but Shingrix arm felt heavy and achy for a few hours.

That sounds familiar. Mind you it’s been more than a few hours now!! Hopefully it will have passed by the morning. Thank you.

Sorry to hear you got a reaction. After the first one I felt dreadful. I had GI problems, ached like mad, and very fatigued. My arm was itchy and painful around the site of the injection . I also got tingles in my thigh . I thought maybe that might be linked to my vascular issues, but it only came on after the jab. In fact, I felt so rough. I didn't want to have the second one . I spoke to the nurse and she said it was probably a strong reaction from my immune system, and that the next time, it would recognise it , so the reaction wouldn't be so bad. She was right. A bit of fatigue with the second one but nothing more.

I too , have been fine with flu amd covid jabs

I hope your symptoms don't get any worse, and wish you better soon.

Owww that sounds rough! My arm feels very hot at the injection site but not visibly red. How long did you feel like that?

MadBunny profile image
MadBunny in reply toBon1

About 4- 5 days. I certainly wasn't expecting it .

Thanks for letting me know. I feel somewhat better knowing this is fairly common!

My husband was just knocked out after first vac and said he felt dreadful. He slept a lot but after 24 hrs was completely fine. I hope you feel better in the morning. Different for everyone as has often been said.

Thank you SL. I’ve just got up for work and feel like I’ve been run over by a truck in the night although arm no longer so painful. Sincerely hope it’ll be with it because shingles was awful!!

Aah. Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you will be feeling top notch after 24 hrs. At least you know you have done all you can to avoid shingles.

Dreadful really awful, sore arm, headache, tired, and repeat then I even got Shingles again. It’s only 70% effective anyway.

Argh what a shame! Yes I’m wondering about efficacy, because although I tend to pause my methotrexate for a week I can’t really do that for my Rinvoq (which wonderful as it is I suspect was what triggered the shingles the first time).

Thank you for your reply

Hi. Yes I had a bad reaction to both Shingrix vaccines. My arm swelled up very noticeably and it was the colour of a tomato and spread around my upper arm both times and very sore. I am glad it is a one off but would have them again because shingles is far worse, as you know.

I had shingles twice before the vaccine and that was ordered by the RA consultant as then too young to get it, then got it again a year after vaccine. Shingles is dreadful ! Xx

So true! Would put up with A LOT to avoid shingles again!

Hi there Bon1,

I had the Shingrix shots in February/April this year and I had a very sore arm (but I think only after the 2nd shot)! The nurse had warned me that I wouldn't be able to lie on my arm and she was right! It didn't hurt much when I moved it but touching the injection site was very painful, luckily this only lasted for a few days or so. I only had pain though, no swelling or tingling or anything. After the second shot I also felt a bit ill (sort of flu-like symptoms) but only for 24h and I took a paracetamol, which helped a lot. Hope you'll feel better soon!!! All the best, Christine

Thanks Christine

Much better today, but had to sleep on my back instead of side last night because of my sore arm!

It certainly stung when it went in and my arm ached for days. The red swelling then itched like mad and just over two weeks later has faded. Not looking forward to the next one!

Ouch mine has calmed down now and no redness hope your next is an easier experience.

I have been very lucky in that I’ve had no reaction at all - not even a sore arm on either the first or the second half of it. I have had shingles and it was vile so it’s def worth having the vaccine as the effects of it are nothing as bad as the shingles itself.

I’ve actually never had a reaction to any vaccines -flu, covid and recently another pneumovax - so I’m very glad for me but very sorry for others who clearly have a horrible time after being jabbed. Do hope you feel better v soon!

Sore arm, fever, chills, severe headache, dizziness, nausea for 2 days after the first jab. Sore, itchy arm lasted a week. I am seriously considering not having a 2nd. I am on Methotrexate and have had no real problem with Flu or Covid vaccinations.

Hi. I was like you. I decided I wasn't having the 2nd but after hearing the horror stories of shingles itself I decided to have it. Yes, it was as bad as the 1st one but I am glad I've had it. I just kept thinking that the vaccine effects would last a week at most and the pain of shingles can last for months and longer in some cases. No contest! I hope this helps you.

I was so bad after the first one, with the same symptoms as yours. I wasn't going to have the second one but decided to and I was fine- just a bit of an achey arm.

Hi Dayli that reaction makes mine feel like a walk in the park, sorry to hear that. It seems a lot of people who have replied found the second one easier so fingers crossed the same would apply to you.

Last week, nauseous next day, flushed cheeks, headache for 2 day, very fatigued, sore stiff injection site. That was the 2nd shingrix thank goodness. The first was milder so I didn't mind going for the 2nd!

Thanks for your reply. Hopefully all settled down now and no more to do!

I reacted strongly to the first jab. Felt I’ll for days. Nervous about the second one but it must be better than getting the real thing.

I can definitely testify to that! I would share a photo of me the day I got admitted but it is horrible! All the best

I just found out we can ask for a shingles jab, I didn't know this.

I was ok for 2 days and then had a really sore arm for ages with numb fingers. I didn’t feel well but was also struggling with a new biologic and iron tablets so don’t really know what was due to what! I’m not looking forward to the next one.

I had the shingles vaccine 3 weeks ago and my arm still hurts to touch. I did react badly to the first jab and every muscle and joint hurt even the soles of my feet. I had headaches, stomach aches and a fever and I'm not looking forward to the second vaccine. Hope you feel better soon

I had my first dose on Monday. Feel terrible. First 24 hrs just a bit sore and maybe slightly achy, day 2 I felt awful, whole body aches, restless legs, shivers, redness. Day 3 felt better regards aches, but injection site is red and has spread, lymph nodes achy. Oh the joys!
