pill problem

Hello everybody I don’t often post. To cut a very long story short I have now been asked to take as well as my methotrexate.Hydroxychioroquine. The problem is I cannot swallow pills I get away with methotrexate, simply because they are tiny pills and they almost melt before I’ve even had a chance to swallow. I know that these cannot be crushed or taken any other way.. any suggestions anybody I’ll be very grateful.

I take my pills with a banana. Chew a bit of banana and just before swallowing pop the pill in your mouth, coat it with the banana and swallow. For me it makes the pill go down without feeling it. Porridge also works.

Best,

Pino

For me the hydroxy is the worst tasting of all pills :( I cover it in peanut butter & swallow with a drink of water, might work for you good luck :)

Poo it into spoonful of something you like, honey, marmite, applesauce, ice cream or yoghurt. Good luck.

I bought a pill splitter from Boots, cost around £1.99, about 10 years ago and it's been a game changer. I chop Naproxen in half to make easier to swallow.

Hydroxy are awful. I'm brilliant at taking pills and even I struggled with those. You can get mtx injections but that's not going to help with the other.

Speak to your rheumy team.

Hi there, I have the very same issue as yourself and cannot swallow pills which are any bigger than methotrexate. When I was first diagnosed last year I did raise this with my consultant and the response I got was that I basically just had to deal with it which wasn't very helpful and gave me massive anxiety. I was also prescribed hydroxychloroquine. I did lots of research and found a list of medications which can be crushed (often used in care home settings for the elderly who have swallowing issues). I am only telling you what I choose to do and I am in no way offering any medical advice here. I stopped methotrexate but continued with the hydroxy and I take it by crushing and mixing it with orange juice. The taste is very bitter and nasty but I have now become used to it.

Hi thank you for your reply. I have had this problem since I don’t know when. Also I’m worried the affect it will have on my overall health. This problem has been giving the me anxiety attacks. I will be speaking to the RA nurse about this but I suspect I will get little sympathy. But you given me a thought. Believe me i have crushed many pills in my time.
